Hello all, looking for some advice for my wife’s 2010 sr5 4Runner. Im pretty intense with modding my 2021 tundra but I’ve neglected my wife’s 4runner. And she’s asking for a few upgrades so I’m going to try and make it happen for her.

Her current head unit is the plain cd player, no touch screen, no backup camera. Can I purchase a 2014-2018 head unit with navigation and add on a factory or aftermarket backup camera?

Goal is to give her navigation and the backup camera. Thanks ahead of time for the info

Welcome. It's not going to be an easy 1 for 1 swap. The wiring and antennas aren't in yours. Best bet is to get an aftermarket headunit with those built in.

    Thank you!

Any suggestions? I’ve looked at crutchfield, I’m just not a huge fan of the camera options they offer. Would rather have an oem type camera vs the license plate bracket option.

You can install the 2020+ head unit with the compatible harness. It has inbuilt navigation but also works with AA and CP. The OEM navigation maps are mostly outdated.

The new heat unit has an option to add rear and front view cameras. The harness will support those. Installing the rear camera is a pain in the butt. Either you will have to rip open the boot plastic trim and put it next to the plate lights for the OEM look or install it inside right behind the rear window or around the rear bumper. Routing the rear wire is time consuming, frustrating and an exercise in patience. Front camera is easy.

The head units run anywhere between $700 to 1000 and the harness is around $250. OEM rear view Cameras run about $80 used on eBay and the headache is extra.
    I have a 2011 SR5 for reference.

The tedious job of running the camera wire through the tailgate hinge flex to the head unit is the reason I haven't added a backup camera on mine.

Don't be tempted with wireless backup cameras as they have lag.

Crutchfield is a good option to do a search, then go out to the Googs and search for a specific model you like.

The smaller square cameras will screw to the bottom of the liftgate handle in the OEM spot pretty well. But as said above, you're wiring those to the front.
You just need to decide what features you want in a headunit and what size. Then start the Googling. Android units are something that will do everything and usually come plug and play with all the antennas, etc.

Trail Grid Pro will have ready made plug n play bundles , but pricey. But that's for quality custom to your vehicle .

Wireless cameras are a great theory for convenience, but yeah by the time they actually pop on your screen you've already backed out of the parking spot and on your way.

So basically either man up and run the wires or do without a backup camera? Lol

bluntly put, but yup. It's not hard if you have a set of glow rods to shove through the rubber grommet sleeves.

That's how i ran my rear dashcam wire.

Honestly not intimidated by doing it. Do most people go through great headliner once inside or do they go down a pillar and under seats?

it's easy to run it around the headliner and can easily stuff it under the plastic trim. Hardest part is getting it out of the tailgate, cake after that.
