There has been a ton of rain in my area lately. Like record amounts. My 4runner is living outside for a couple more weeks. Today i heard a sloshing noise, near the back of the car. I pulled the plugs in the hatch and gallons of water drained out. how concerned should i be?
also im assuming ive just got a bad seal on the window somewhere
Anyone else have this on a 4th gen?

I don't think the seal at the bottom of the rear window is supposed to be perfectly waterproof even when new. Maybe you have other drain holes that are clogged at the bottom of the hatch?

As in there are small drains that are supposed to be always open that could be clogged? Could VERY well be. Based off what i scrubbed off this vehicle 2 weeks ago when i bought it, i could see the possibility of some debris and such clogging up the smaller drains, if they exist

THe drains do exist, pull the inside cover and clean/vacuum out any debris, find the drains, they will have a plastic inserts in the bottom of the hatch that let water drain but stops bugs from entering, make sure they are cleared, then put it back together.

The weather stripping as mentioned will not stop some water from getting in, if it did the window wouldn't go up and down correctly, it's only there to keep out debris and some water, hence the drains.

The drains maybe the "plugs" you removed to get the water out, I don't recall any plugs but there may be some.

Agreed, the drains are likely clogged. A collision center run by my local Toyota dealer replaced the full window seal around the opening and the other molding against the glass at the bottom with Toyota parts for just under $300. The window now has a much smoother motion for the full travel distance, and the new mouldings look great. Additionally, if the lower moulding is dry-rotted or missing in places, it allows an excessive amount of coarse/gritty dust from dusty forest service roads (here in the east) into the tailgate and grates on the glass when rolled up and down. It also degrades the rubber faster as the glass slides past it. Getting the best seal with all new moulding is an investment in maintaining the coolest feature of our 4Runners - the roll-down window!
