Hello! I have a 2024 and I'm following recommendations I've read about placing the vehicle in 4wd monthly and driving a mile or two. Then, I just put it in L4 and then back out w/o driving. The truck goes into H4 like a champ, then easy shift thru neutral but grinding to get it into L4 and out. REALLY bad grinding. The videos I've seen show it being as smooth as going into H4. I brought it to the attention of the dealership w/o success..........recommendations?

I’d see if it smoothes out with a couple more actuations but consider another dealer if it continues. You could definitely have them compare with a 4Runner on the lot if they don’t believe you.

Drive it a little more...on 4Lo but make sure you are going straight and in some sort of gravel road. Turn on MTS and let the system cycle a few times. You will hear the abs system also making lots of weird and grinding noises.....all that normal. Then go thru the sequence again, 4Lo to 4H etc..and see. Are you going thru putting the vehicle in neutral, when you are going in and out of 4Lo? Some folks forget and if you try without it the grinding noise is bad and you can't go into it. If nothing else go back to dealer as suggested by @icebear

Manual case? You have to shove it into and out of low, don’t limp wrist it. Also you should be in neutral at the trans before trying for low range.

ChessGuy is right. You need need to shift the transmission into neutral (or park) before shifting the transfer case between Hi and Lo. If you try to shift the transfer case Hi to Lo while in Drive, it's going to fight you.

I usually shift the transmission to neutral, let it sit for a few seconds or more, then shift the transfer case from Hi to Lo. That gives everything a chance to spin down to minimize the grind.

Thanks for the info! I have the trans in neutral however, I have not shoved it as whippersnapper recommended. I will give that a try.

I got grinding just once when I forgot to put truck in neutral before shifting from 4hi to 4lo. Since then I never forget putting transmission to N first : ) By the way recommendation is to monthly drive at least 10 miles in 4hi.

With the manual transfer case, I wouldn’t be as concerned as with the SR5 and Limited.

    Normal...

It will grind if you fuck around with it and try and be delicate.

Have you ever racked a shotgun? That's the way you shift the transfer case. Be fast and brutal and shift with purpose from 4H right through N to 4L, and back again.

Also I'd drive it a little in 4L, just straight forward 50' or so if you are trying to exercise the actuator and keep the diff lubed.

Do you put your trans into neutral? Are you already in H4 before shifting into L4?

^^^ Agree, just hit the gravel roads in my state park on the way home from the store. Exercised 4H, then stopped and put it in neutral, then threw it over and up into 4L. No issue at all. Hopefully its a one time issue with you and it smooths out.

Thank you so much for the responses, you folks know a whole lot more that the techs at the dang dealership. So, I went out and tried it again WITHOUT being delicate with it...(retired LEO so I racked it like my issued shotgun in August on the west side of town).....shifted into L4 like butter. Thanks again!
