To answer a previous reply, I pulled my back seats for a few reasons. First, in the 2025 non hybrid, the seats folded down are not level with the rest of the cargo area. Very annoying. This is due to no batteries in a non hybrid.
Second, I just don’t need them, and my cat Blossom travels with me so I wanted her to have max room in the back to chill out.
Also, I am an RC guy and my planes are huge. The room is appreciated.

This is pretty much the situation in Wisconsin as well. Most of the time, if you find ethanol free it is only available in premium. I have found ethanol free regular up north, but there's a pretty hefty price difference.

Ethanol free here is only available in 87 octane but it's priced similar to premium.

Well, real world testing I get 4 mpg less with ethanol blends. I’ll go with real world data.

We only have gas with ethanol here in New England.

    Well,
I’m an as9100 aerospace engineer at Tolerance Masters in critical flight safety systems for commercial airliners. Just retired after 42 years.
There is what science and math and computer simulations will say on what is real, and then after real world testing we have to adjust all that data so that families and kids will fly safe.
You sure you know what your talking about?

I have done the same real world comparisons myself over several tanks and found results to be close to what the chemistry would predict. While calculated estimates and reality do differ to a degree, in my experience a variance of 6.6X would suggest there are other variables in play. it's not worth arguing about beyond this though.

Again, and I'm serious, I hope you enjoy your new 4Runner.

    Congratulations and welcome.

I haven't read all the posts, so hopefully I don't re-state something. But how many miles on your truck? My 2019, if the MPG meter is reset, takes a while to get back to displaying what MPG the truck is actually getting. Like several tankfuls. Also, are you doing any manual calculations?

Cool! I flew RC planes for a few years. Had a blast. Is everything electric these days? Even something that big?

I just got a gas TRD premium and I’ve only driven it about 55 miles. 30 of those miles were on highway where the max I drove was 55 mph, the rest were short trips in the city. I’m an old lady and I drive like an old lady, I drive slow. I glide to the stop sign. I don’t accelerate aggressively. So far my mileage is 10.8 mpg’s. I hope it improves.

You should start seeing 18 plus, if not 20. Was the 30 miles hilly? There are a lot of things that impact the mpgs.

I wouldn't worry too much about the computers estimate after only 55 miles.

I'll also add that babying it too much off the line might actually result in worse fuel economy than accelerating at a moderate pace.

You don’t really have enough miles on it to interpret that mpg reading. Not to mention those miles probably include transport on/off boats and trucks and idling time. It's easy enough reset the MPG meter and start measuring based on how you drive it. Even then, I wouldn’t call it a good average MPG reading unless over a couple of tankfuls.

It’s also worth saying that expecting the advertised MPG is not silly when toyota made the gas tanks smaller than before.

I know the 5th gen 4wd were rated at 19mpg highway but I routinely get 21-22mpg on the highway. At that rate the 6th gen has to hit 25mpg just to reach parity with the 5th gen, and not too many reports of people actually getting 25 mpg on highway trips.

Ooof. I get 16 MPG from my 2023 ORP with 33" MT's. And I do not drive it easy either.

I have a 2025 TRD ORP (non hybrid). So far after 500+ miles of both city and highway driving I'm averaging 19.7

If the average is calculated and holds across the board (Fuelly, multiple vehicles), thats a solid improvement over the 5th’s 17-18 mpg.

Last generation, hitting 20* MPG average in something midsize and BOF meant going for the base 159-200 hp 4-cylinder. (Tacoma’s 2.7 and the GM twin’s 2.5, or the Ranger’s 2.3T for slightly less fuel economy)

If you wanted a V6 and 20* MPG you’d have to go crossover. The Honda midsizers, Sorento (V6), Telluride, Traverse all sit around there on Fuelly.

    *give or take 1 MPG

Not to mention much of the gain is from the 8 speed transmission. Any time a car model moves from 5/6 to 8-10 speed the mpg goes up noticeably and 0-60 drops about 15%. Often times the "feel" of faster acceleration is just from more gears being available. I saw that with Ford trucks, when the F350 went from the 6R140 to 10R140, it felt like a brand new truck even with the same old 6.2 liter SOHC motor with no displacement increase or forced induction. Same thing happened with FCA products pentastar and Hemi powered models that went from Mecedes WA580 to the ZF 8HP gearboxes.

So realistically the gain from the 4.0 to the 2.4 Turbo netted less than one mpg improvement.

I hope it was all worth it to those who won't buy a 6th gen anyway.

Next time I fill it up I'll be sure to reset my trip odometer (not that simple lol) and when I fill up again I'll report back with my mpg.

I use the Fuelly app, gives me my tank average each time I fill up, and then overall mpgs

And? bancroft said that number was both city and highway.

I was speaking average numbers in my post from Fuelly data.

Well it’s supposed to be getting 21 combined. I can get 18-19 combined with my 8 year old 5th gen. How is it not disappointing to have all of this new and expensive technology and get almost the same mpg?

EPA estimate is exactly that, some folks will be above, some will be below, the vehicle might underperform overall - it won’t be the first, won’t be the last.

The last-gen 2.3T Ranger was rated for 20-21 city. Fuelly average was around 19.5 MPG.

Not to mention individual experiences aren’t enough for conclusions.

My 4Runner has seen as low as 15 MPG on a tank and as high as 22. Doesn’t mean the estimate of 17 average is inherently flawed.

5th gen’s average around 17.5 MPG on Fuelly, it’s good that you’re over-performing (me too) but doesn’t mean the vehicle itself is going to consistently beat its 17 MPG combined score.

If the 6th gen ends up yielding 20 MPG combined, 1 shy of its EPA combined estimate, that’s still a 13% improvement over 17.5 MPG. Hardly insignificant.

TFL saw 23.5 MPG highway (22.7 without the airdam, 65-75 MPH) in their 6th gen and that’s nearly 24% improvement over the 5th gen’s 19. (17.5% if we give the 5th gen a more charitable 20 MPG)

(of course I know true mileage will vary depending on speeds, I got a whopping 30 MPG in my Sorento cruising for hours at 45 MPH once.)
