I have the full CBI skids on my 5th gen 4runner and am wondering if I still need more theft protection for my cats since I’ve lifted it. The CBI skids cover the cats and the driver-side seems safe but there’s a possibility that the passenger cat has enough space to fit a long sawzall blade through.

    What are your thoughts?

We have CBI's on ours as well. I don't think a thief would put that much effort into trying to get them. Most if not all of the cat thefts have been a quick cut and go. It take quite a few get a descent dollar value out of them anyway.

I think you are protected. But review your insurance with you agent to learn if replacement cats are covered item. My Miller Cat Shield is aluminum and not intended for rock guard duties, but offers some protection for my dirt road outings, And acts as a cat theft deterrent.

If I didn’t already have my cbi skid that covered that area, I would have went with the miller shield. Your shield also adds those side wings that completely enclose the cats and I wish my skids had that.

Have you had any issues with the miller shield?
The only complaint I’ve seen about the miller shield is not having a transmission fluid change access other than that, everyone seems to love them

I have had no issues. Correct in its removal is required for service. First the factory engine shield then the Miller Cat shield. My local dealer (who sells Miller Cat products) charges $50 service to remove & replace. I purchased my shield direct from manufacturer. It is also offered in stainless steel. I am fortunate that both my fav service writer and shop technician own 4 runners.

These appear to be side wings CBI put in specifically to discourage cat theft. (They do almost nothing for rock-crawling protection.) I don't think a prospective thief will bother with your cats when they see the skid plates.

I haven't heard cases of skid plate theft either, considering they're potentially worth more than rear cats and can be fenced easily on FB Marketplace
