I am currently on my 4th 4Runner a 21 TRD Off Road. Have owned a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th gen. Skipped the 4th because kids going to college was expensive and the 3rd gen just kept on trucking with no problems. Traded it in on the 5th gen with almost 400k on it. I have loved the TRD Off Road I have now and the reliability of all the trucks I have owned. But i am taking a good long look at the new 6th gen, if they are still looking like they will be reliable in a couple of years I think I will get my 5th 4Runner.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

So far, the biggest negative I'm hearing about the 6th Gen is the price and how high it is. Only time will tell about the reliability of the drive train and other components.

Yeah they are a bit pricy but if they are reliable it will be worth it. Love how they look and features for off roading in the Pro and Trail Runner. Stabilizer disconnect and locking diff's are a big plus for me.

Personally, I think the TRD off-road, preferably non-premium package, is he sweet spot. You get all the off-road goodies, and I think the disconnecting stabilizer is an option at that level, but don't pay for fancy stuff you might not necessarily need.

And to be clear, it's only one locking diff. Only the rear locks, they do not offer a front locking diff on the 4Runner.

But I agree with your main point, give it a few years to see how the reliability works out, and if it's looking good, go for it. With the 5th gen, they restyled it for its fourth model year, so I might even wait to see what the mid-cycle refresh looks like and decide then.

    Welcome to the forum.

Time will tell on what takes place with the 6th generation 4runner, and we are all keeping an ear open as to any issues.

Maybe test drive one and look over the interior seating space, cargo space and of course the new turbo 4 cylinder, non-hybrid. For me personally, I’d target the least expensive SR5 4X4 in order to offset the increase in price, then modify it to your specific taste. Welcome to the forum!

I'm my books no turbo engine would be reliable as 5th gen 1GRFE or something like 4.7 2UZFE.
Till date outside of USA you can buy a Land cruiser 300 with the same 4LV6. That should tell alot about it.

In the interests of reliability my top choice would be low miles well maintained 5th gen 4runner.

Closely 2nd would be low miles well maintained GX460.

Me personally I doubt that I could set my mind to downgrade to the 2.4L turbo on 6th gen 4runner or Land Cruiser 250. I don't think I would even think of buying the 3.4 twin turbo on GX550, Tundra,.. Especially after watching a tear down video seeing how it was built.

Yes only 1 diff. I did not know disconnect was an option on the TRD off road. If so I would do that and upgrade shocks, tires bumper and wench with the savings. Being a 4 banger is not an issue if it is reliable.

Per a Toyota mechanic I follow on Youtube, per his opinion it will not be reliable as a 5th gen 4runner. But if you are on top of the maintenance and not exceed 5000miles between oil changes you are very likely to get good life out of it.
