2nd time 4Runner owner, Millennium Edition along time ago.

Hoping to build this one for long wandering trips capable of any "road" surface with some camping and mountain biking gear.

I'm sure I'll be asking the usual stuff - feel free to tell me to use the search bar :)

37K on it, seems really clean, didn't want the new Gen so this worked out well.

I was able to negotiate a bit, ended up right at $40K. They were asking $43K (which I think was about the original sticker price). Still more than I should have paid, but Any TRD model is selling for a premium (especially the Pro, everyone I found was 50K miles and $12K over original sticker). I'm planning to keep it for ever, so even if I over paid a bit, I got a super clean 4Runner with Low miles to start the journey.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 35 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 35yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
Good deal, you stole it. ORP with that little miles go to at least $5k more than that around here, that’s if you can even find one with that low mileage before someone else buys it.

I know I should feel good about the price :) - I did see many others with more miles. Some had sun roof, which would have been nice to have, most were pretty beat up already with minor paint work and multiple owners. A lot of 4Runners are used for short term work truck leases it seems.

Well - trying to sort out my compromise build :). I know I'm not wanting to rock crawl. I like to travel out west (and also to south of me in KY, TN and NC)and visit remote places. I'm about 4 years from formal retirement, and my wife will still be working for another 5 years. SO, the idea is to build up a bit of a light overlander, not too big/heavy, but capable enough to carry me likely solo to some interesting places. A for instance - I rented a 4Runner SR5 last fall in Vegas and took it up to Saint George Utah and onto the Vermillion Cliffs area to the east. The Sr5 on Dualer stock tires did ok on the deep sand above Saint George (10" or so deep)on the way up to Candy Cliffs. A few times I felt like I needed more tire, but I made it ok. Then I decided to try and make it to The White Pocket in Vermillion Cliffs. By all accounts a 30+ mile one way journey on BLM lands, much of it on rougher gravel. The last bit of the route is in deep sand on basically a one way "road". I made it pretty far into the sand section, but it became clear the sand was going to win, and I found a place to turn around and got back out of there in one piece. The sand was dragging on the bottom of the 4runner at times! This experience is kinda what I'm using to gauge what mods I want to make to the suspension/tires and protection. My guess is going up to the 285 tires, and the Bilstein lift along with an air down kit would make the White Pocket trip much, much easier, and the 4WD controls on the TRD would help as well. So this is kinda an initial focus. What tire - I think the Wildpeaks look like a good choice, likely SL, not E for better mileage. Next thought is do I dump the predator steps and just either skip rock rails, or go with a basic rock rail, also consider some additional skid plates, although I'm not entirely sure I need them for my use case. I think I'll hold off on a roof rack / RTT setup for now, get out on a shorter trip or two and see what else makes sense to add. I usually take my mountain bike and camera gear (like to do landscape photography). I will be upgrading my rear bike rack with the swing away adapter kit to make it easier to get into the back of the runner. I may just go for broke and get a new Bike rack, more off road rated (1 Up Super Duty) than the one I have now (Kuat). Any thought on the suspension/ rock rails and such welcome! So many mods for the 4Runner, it's a bit mind boggling to sort through and find the right choices.

Sounds like a great, well reasoned plan. First upgrade is definitely the tires. I’m running KO3s but if I had it to do over I would choose the Wildpeak. If you’re thinking about holding off on skid plates, then personally I would hold off on rock sliders as well. I have Bilstein 6112 front and 5100 rear and am completely satisfied with them. A second choice in suspension would be Falcon Sports, they get excellent reviews in comparison to similar brands. Be ready for minor modifications to correct rubbing with 285/70 tires.
Don’t forget to post pics of the progress!

I had it installed at Les Schwab, to include SPC upper control arms and rear coil springs. I bought the part through them and total including labor was $3400. I think labor was about $550.
