Anyone who doesn't change it every 3K obviously doesn't care about their vehicle.

How TF did he get a million miles? Highway. Lot's of it. 'Nuff said. You're grocery getter isn't going a million miles on 10-12K oil changes.

    3K??? That's insane.

I have my oil changed by a high school dropout at my Toyo dealer every 25 miles.

But I always change my oil before I take my Runner in for an oil change. Then I change my oil when I get home because I don't trust the dealer to do it right.

I also rotate the air in my tires every other oil change.

I'm thinking about adding Raptor lights to make night time changes easier.

    What fuse should I tap?

But you're advocating for 10-12K oil changes. Under normal driving, that's going to kill an engine.

There’s already plenty of random anecdotes of Toyota’s going the distance on 10k mile intervals especially if they’re highway stars.

The debate will then become whether one’s use qualifies, “here’s my oil analysis”, “oil analysis sucks because (reason)”, “moly”, “severe duty”, etc.

    Here’s a million-mile Frontier on 10k mile OCI’s and Chicago-area delivery.

How about a bigger oil filter - called secondary oil filter. These have been around for decades.
This one takes a roll of toilet paper.

That’s smart. You can never be too careful when it comes to your oil and tire air.

It’s really not. How many miles is someone doing normal driving realistically putting on a vehicle?

You're justifying your position on 10k mile oil changes by only giving half the facts. Yes, if I am driving 400+ miles daily on the expressway, the 10k mile change interval does work. However, a majority of us dont do that and drive locally, stop and go traffic, cold weather etc. In those conditions you should change your oil every 5k miles. An oil change using Penzoil Ultra Platinum and on OEM filter costs me $45. I will follow the advice of The Car Care Nut and Viking Garage. Also, you're the same dude who actually was bragging that you never changed your brake fluid.

    • If the vehicle operation meets the standard criteria for "Special Operating Conditions" such as: driving off-road, on dirt roads, towing a trailer, making repeated short trips under 32˚ F, or extensive idling; the engine oil must be replaced at 5,000 mile intervals, regardless of what type of oil is used.

I think it depends on what you define as "normal."

If you're talking mostly highway, no heavy towing, and not hauling a lot of extra weight, 10K is fine.

For mostly city, towing, hauling, and other hard driving habits, 5K is probably a better choice. I fall into this category.

Or, as mentioned elsewhere, follow the manual and don't other-think it.

I drive around 45-50K miles per year. Although, I'm not sure I’d consider that normal. :D

Also, only about half of that is in the 4Runner.

What about the guy hauling heavy loads for many of those miles? Isn’t that special operating conditions?
Did you see the post I made over the weekend about my brake fluid? I flushed it at 202K miles and don’t notice any change in breaking. :D

I guess not. A million miles isn’t enough engine life for some people.

I do around 20K. I think the average person does 12K per year. At that rate it would take them 83 years to hit a million miles.

The guy really had no choice but to do 10k oil changes with that much driving. He wasn't hauling a heavy trailer ether.

    When i did 25-30k a year i did 10k oil changes, now i do ~12k a year and do 6k oil changes.

    Don't forget

1 million miles highway is equivalent to 100,000 Miles City driving...

So I would still change the oil at 5-6k to be on the safe side...

But what kind and viscosity of oil should I use? I know what it says in the owner's manual, but I don't trust those Toyota Engineers because a guy on the internet says they WANT your engine to blow.

And it's the internet, so he couldn't put it out there if it wasn't true...

And how often should I rotate my tail light bulbs to keep my engine from blowing up between tire air rotations?

    Who says that?
Does that mean that a taxi that has 300K miles on it could have driven 3 million miles on the highway?

Think he was joking/exaggerating the advantages of highway vs city.

But i would certainly bet a taxi that has 300K city miles will look much worse then a taxi with 300k highway miles.
