Funny this thread seems to have put the spurs to my dealership, got this text msg..

    <excerpt>
“Thank You for visiting with our service department. The reason for my contact is to ask if you were interested in selling or trading in your vehicle, we are actively shopping for preowned vehicles and your vehicle seems like a great fit for us on paper. If you're interested on scheduling a meet go ahead and give me a call or text at…”

Emphasis on “great fit for us…” yeah, riiight.

They offered 42, I asked for 43. I had the 23 Limited packed and ready to go to the beach for the week. No time for hassles and drama.

I get the feeling the amount of letters, texts, and emails offering 'great trade-in deals' will turn into a deluge once the tariffs on all imports takes hold. They won't be able to move 6th gens once that happens - they already seem priced out of reach.

    Stock so far…..
Between a 2019 Tacoma Sport Premium trade in and a hefty down payment, we only financed a small portion of the price of a new 2024 4R Pro for the missus.
Paid it off with some extra cash each month, and it was "ours" in 6 months.
Much easier to do that, now that the eaterbeasts are self-sustaining.

I just got the text today that they want to put me into 2025 4Runner TRD Sport for only $87.00 CAD a month more than I was paying on my 2023 ORP. The trade in value they assessed ($55k) is actually not bad at all considering MSRP was $59k. The main kicker is the 2025 Sport is non-hybrid and has cloth seats.

    Text from local dealer:

"Your 4Runner has a significant amount of residual value at this time. Please schedule an appointment to come in and have your vehicle appraised so we can discuss options."

People already demonstrated they are willing to finance whatever since the average transaction price on new cars at end of 2024 was over 50k. What's another 150 dollars a month over 84 months matter to these buyers.

You could have sold it yourself for 49k and get more $. Dealership are in to win, not to loose profit.

Got a letter begging me to trade in my 19 for a new one. Basically offering me what i bought it for in 19 to put towards a 6th gen. lol

At this rate my 19 4Runner is my new retirement investment plan.

Dealerships have two advantages that allows them to leverage higher sale price than you and I can as private citizens:

-more manpower and existing advertising/sales infrastructure such that tirekickers and scammers on CL/FBMarket/etc are somewhat filtered out, selling a car as a private party can be fine or it can be a frustrating experience.

-dealerships have access to financing that an individual simply cannot match. On the extreme side of things, outfits like CarMAX are essentially BHPH dealers who finance the vehicles they sell in house, and that's why they can sell cars for more than even franchise new car dealers, because there are plenty of people whose sub-prime credit cannot get loans with traditional banks at new car and regular used car dealers.

Too poor to buy anything now
Plus, in my state, I would only pay sales taxes on the difference when trading. If I sold privately and then bought another, I'd pay sales taxes on the full amount.

My friend recently bought a 2020 Army Green TRD Pro in DFW...

    75K miles...out the door price was $50,850

DFW toyota dealers have a few used 5th gens on the lots...
but most are 2WD and they still want too much

Damn, wish I would have known your friend was looking. Mine can be had with 16,000 miles for only $95,000.

I could have fun with that. Since I have no payment on my 24 ORP I guess they'll hand me the title to the new 25.
