    Hi all,

I searched google and these forums, but couldn't find an answer to this question.

I'm on a waitlist for a 2019 TRD Pro and I'm contemplating getting the hood/fender and the bumper Paint Protection (clear film). The pricing is a $295 for the hood/fender and $395 for the bumper.

    • Question: Does anyone know the coverage of the Paint Protection Film for the Bumper? Is it the entire bumper or just certain sections?
Xpel is pretty pricey and it makes the dealer/factory options seem pretty reasonable. I don't have any plans on getting a bumper or a wench any time soon and I just want to keep the 4runner looking as nice as possible. I have a 2006 Sienna that has 140K miles on it and the hood and bumper have been rock chipped to death.

I had the factory paint Protection Film on my 2019 Off-Road. I had the 4Runner (super white) less than a month and the film started to yellow. 1BFB76ED-40A4-4F41-861B-E55A8ACFF27B.jpg
Zoom in and you can clearly see the line and yellowing.

They put the film on the front 1/4 of the hood and along the bumper sides but not on the front of the bumper.
I specifically asked the salesman about yellowing and he told me new adhesive on the film doesn’t yellow. This was confirmed with some other information I read on the internet. Plus he said if there was a problem it is covered by the 36/36K mile bumper to bumper, because it’s put on by the factory.
When it started to yellow I took it back and showed the salesman and he agreed it was turning yellow and to go to the service department. I took it to the service department and the service manager and body shop Forman agreed it was yellowing. They told me they had to contact Toyota Corp. about getting it fixed under the warranty. I told them I didn’t want it replaced and they didn’t even have to refund me the additional cost off the sticker price for the protection, I just wanted it removed. That was 3 weeks ago and I still have not gotten an answer from Toyota. You would think it’s a no brainer, since it was a factory (it’s actually added on at the port of arrival, just like running boards etc..)
But Toyota Corp so far has baulked at resolving the issue. Fortunately the body shop Forman is a friend and he had me bring it in and one of his techs removed it in about an hour for no charge.
    So long story long.
I got a super white 4Runner which may have amplified the yellow look, but still as my friend said it’s supposed to be “clear” protection film. Toyota Corp may have eventually fixed it, but waiting 3+ weeks for the go ahead seams pretty lame, especially on such an obvious defect. When and if Toyota Corp gets back to me you can be sure I am going to give them an ear full. I had the same issue when my third brake light leaked on my Tacoma twice, while it was under warranty and the dealership replaced the defective part with another defective part. It took almost a month for Toyota Corp to approve the warranty work.
My answer for sure if you are getting white don’t do it. Any other color I can’t answer. And be prepared that if it gets discolored you are going to have to deal with Toyota’s warranty claim issues.
True story as I was typing this out I got a call from Toyota. The regional service boss has to take a look at it, she won’t be in this area for another month. But supposedly if she agrees it is discolored it will be fixed. I said thanks but no thanks I resolved the problem on my own.
I am going to get my friend and his tech a twelve pack of their favorite beer for their service.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear about the hassle you went through. But, I really appreciate you giving me your feedback and sharing the photo about the film yellowing. Saved me from the headache as well. I also got the 4Runner in super white. I guess I'll be calling around more shops on quotes for Xpel. From what I've read so far, the Xpel film doesn't yellow.

For whatever my two cents is worth, my truck has the "factory" film on the hood and mirrors, and I'm disappointed that the edge of the hood is not protected...as you can see in Living the Dream's photo, there's a fraction of an inch left raw. The detail shop I use told me they install hood film so that it wraps under and protects that edge. That "edge", in my experience on past cars, collects dirt and becomes obvious with time. (As an aside, there was a Super White 4Runner in the detail shop having it's hood re-wrapped because it came from the factory with a bloody thumbprint on the underside.)

My last white car had the entire front end wrapped and it slightly yellowed after a few years. Because of that, I would only wrap the bumper if I ever did it again. It seems more noticeable when the fender is wrapped next to an unwrapped door.

If you are going to have this done I think you need to take it to someone that does this all the time. There is a place close to me they install Xpel and Suntek. The difference xpel is more and comes with 10 year warranty. The Suntek comes with 5years. I spoke to the owner because I’m looking at having my 19 Z06 fully wrapped. They do most cars and trucks with Suntex. Really good reviews. I’m also looking at possibly having me Pro done. Just the front and maybe certain other areas.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I've called a few authorized Xpel installers around the Seattle area and the price varies quite a bit for full hood, mirror, and bumper -- lowest was $1,000 and highest was $2,600! The one I liked the most and was very helpful over the phone was $1700. I'm still awhile out as my TRD Pro won't leave Japan till 2/13.

No problem, I think it is good to get the whole hood done on the Pro. With it sitting high and it seems to get hit with stone chip easy. I’m leaning towards getting the full hood. I think if you do the full hood and front panels you will not see any seems. Also the front bumper too.

I won’t over pay but you already paid a lot for the pro why go cheap on protecting it. Pays off in the long run .

I was lurking on the site and decided to create an account to comment on this post. So Ive had my White TRD Pro for almost a year now and mine came with the protection film on the whole front hood. There has been zero discoloration on the film. Ive been waiting for a while for the film to start turning yellow but nothing so far.

I noticed that "Living the Dream" posted a picture of his. But his is only a small portion of the front hood. I didn't even know that this was an option.

    To be determined
Mine came new with film that wraps the entire hood, mirrors, and bumper. It’s held up great so far.
My 2015 Tacoma had the front portion of the hood done and I pulled that off after two years of owning. Had to do a lot of buffing to hide the line where it stopped. My suggestion to anyone thinking about film would be to cover the whole panel to avoid a line/wear mark down the road
