Just wondering what oil I should use and how often I should be changing it?

Haha Just kidding! Thought I'd get ya blood pressure up, dont worry this isn't another "one of those" oil threads lol

FUN FACT: I brought my 4Runner into the Toyota Dealer the other day for its last "free" Toyota Care oil change, its early, about 7,000 miles early but I still wanted it changed. Takes hours out of my day going back and forth and coordinating rides from the dealership to work and back, etc. Pick up the truck after they text me saying its done, and I get home all gleeful that I have indeed committed an act of love for my 4Runner, only to find out the oil is still dirty  It had never been changed although it spent the day at the Dealer.

Natural reaction: Im cussing, pouring wine, pacing around my house trying to figure out my next steps as I take on the dealership who billed off changing the oil but didnt really, I am envisioning arguing with the Service Manager in my head, Toyota Corporate, all these scenarios are playing in my thoughts, etc etc. Then I read the work order: They did a 15,000 miles Toyota care "Inspection", and tire rotation only  No fraud here, just a misunderstanding. Weird because I was discussing the oil change with my service advisor, but he (for some reason) didn't write it up for one at all.

I pulled it up on ramps and changed it myself, the oil was too dark for my liking. Let it drain overnight as I had to wait for that oil filter removal tool to come from Amazon. The oil filter lid actually came off without much of a fight. I found the entire thing to be pretty dang easy to be honest, even with wrestling a little with the skid plates.

I put 6.6qts back in, but its not on the full mark. It looks about midway, and thats with letting is sit for about 4 hours, cold engine. Are you guys adding more than 6.6 quarts?

Call me a conspiracy nut, but I believe changing the oil should only be done once every 100k miles. Anyone who says otherwise is spreading fake news.

Not sure if it's more than 6.6. But it's definitely 6 and a good bit of the 7th bottle but not all.

6.6 puts it in the middle of the crosshatch. When the oil gets hot, the level raises to the “Full” portion of the stick. The middle of the crosshatch is the operating range. Don’t over think it.

haha Pretty good actually, my oil filter canister wasn't torqued down excessively or anything. It came off without a fight, and I was prepared for one - I pulled out the 18" breaker bar in preparation. Additionally none of my skid plate or access cover bolts were stripped; I did clean them up (I live on dirt roads AND the entire truck has been fluid filmed underneath twice so as you can imagine, its pretty sticky/sandy) and applied some Never Seize to everything putting it back together.

It would appear that I still have my one free oil change left seeing how they billed of today as my "15k toyota care inspection". Typical dealer too - they said they topped off all fluids, my washer fluid (the cheapest of all the fluids) was about 1/4 on the dipstick, and my power steering fluid is still a hair below the low line. Just a dealer doing dealer things.

You make an excellent point. I'm going to only use Vegan based products on my vehicle from now on.

Even fake OCI threads morph into real ones. Insert the word oil, and off you go.

The best and only lubrication products you will ever need are made in Germany.

    Veinner-Schlider is my go-to brand.

And I change my oil before I change my oil to take my Runner in for an oil change. Better safe than sorry...

I had an interesting situation with my second, and subsequentially last, free service. Right after I left the dealership I went to pick up my son from school and when I shifted into park the engine started idling rough, like it was going to stall. So I dropped off my son at home and went right back and made them do it again. Turned out they over filled it with oil, at least that's what they told me. It ran fine after they did it again but I've never been back there since. Now I just do my own right in the garage. I always put in approximately 6.5qts and use Mobile 1 full synthetic. I also went the route of installing a drain valve which makes life so much easier, and less messy.

I always do 7 quarts in my 2011 & 2022 and call it a day. It goes to the full mark

Interesting. I wonder if oil was being regurgitated through the intake system and conking it out... I haven't installed the Fumoto Valve yet, buts its on my list.

Yeah I did 6.6qts (roughly - I am going off the rudimentary gauge on the side of the 5qt jug) and its about 1/8" under the full mark. And I let it drain an entire 24 hours!

I think it’s prudent to fill with 6qts, check dipstick and add according to the top fill mark, will prevent overfilling if too much oil is left in. Easier to add than to remove.

Why are we questioning how much oil to put in? If Toyota says to put 6.6 quarts in then put about that much in and move on.
