    Hello, New here.

My wife said this started every morning this week. Can’t repeat it after driving a few minutes for any mechanic to hear it. My hearing is shot as well so, hoping you can point to me what this is.

Are we listening for an exhaust leak/rattle?

This is the secondary air injection system, when you first start the engine you have a rich condition for warm-up. To meet emissions Toyota was forced to put a secondary air injection system in that pushes air into the exhaust. It shuts off after about 20 seconds or so. This is how it does every time you start it, always has, always will. Nothing wrong at all.

*The secondary air pump in a 2UZ-FE engine, like those found in Toyota and Lexus vehicles, injects oxygen into the exhaust system during cold starts to help the catalytic converter reach operating temperature faster and reduce emissions.

All manufacturers have been putting air injection systems on engines for more than six decades.

Seems weird now it’s loud after 17 years. This baby only has 89K miles. I know the air pump is inside of the manifold, are there any external parts like hoses to check? I appreciated the responses as I’m trying to convince my wife we don’t need to take it to the shop.

Its sounded the same way for years.... Whats weird is she is just now noticing it.
Nothing is wrong, perfectly normal, keep driving.
If you havent already done it you should schedule the timing belt and water pump SOON. The belt cracks and degrades over time, 10 years or 90,000 miles is what toyota specifies. We have seen a ton of them with lower mileage that havent been replaced yet and when checked they are all cracked and about to fall apart. If you have not replaced it, you DEFINITELY need to, i will bet its all cracked.

    Where have you seen this?

Are you talking about vehicles that are 15 or 20 years old but low mileage, like the OP's?

Mine actually looked brand new Around 100K when I checked it. But, it was only 5 years old at the time. Finally replaced it at around 237K. I was definitely pushing it at that point!

yea the low mileage 15-20 year old vehicles
The tundra forum where the 2uz is the prevalent talk. I’ve seen pictures of all sorts of timing belts in all conditions and people with 130,000 miles on the stock belt at 18 years old is about to fall apart. It’s age that gets it as well as mileage.

Genuine Toyota/Mitsuboshi timing belts are interplanetary-grade construction. Gates belts, for example, tend to show noticeable age and wear right on schedule at the five year/100,000 km mark.

That makes sense. Plus, low mileage could mean that it sat more, which tends to lead to dry rot.

    Mine was really bad..
