How much is too much for a 2014? Is there any structural concern? will this spread? how bad is it? I live in CO and the truck is from NE.

I'd keep looking. There has to be one from Colorado with less rust than that.

pass. you can find a better example than doesn't require you to justify that condition.

a flaming price could get me into that (or at least could make a good argument) but I’d also have to be willing to dump a lot of elbow grease into treating it.

It doesn’t look like a safety/structural concern to me at that point, but probably a pain to do work on. Depends on price and your goals for the vehicle

There is likely rust out of sight inside the box frame rails. A big job to identify and treat all the visible and hidden rust.
Check the Toyota pre-owned website for West States for sale 4runners. Then before travel to personally inspect a few, get their Car Fax for legal and registered owners to find out they were driven to the West from the salt zone States.

It's maybe not bad for a New England vehicle in New England, but if you're in Colorado, you have access to much better. I personally wouldn't buy a vehicle from New England if I wasn't in New England.

It looks like mostly surface rust to me. I agree a CO truck would look better but if the rest of the vehicle is correct and you like it I wouldn't let this dissuade you.

This spring in a few weeks I plan to wire brush and wire wheel most of the external frame rails and all places i can clean. Then Tremclad it flat black. I am concerned about inside the frame rails but have no great plan for that. Yet. Mine is a 16 and much worse. I go underneath my 21 and theres no rust at all.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 35 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 35yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
Whenever I see threads like this it brings back upstate NY rust nightmares from years ago……then I wake up in the desert, oh yay.

There are problem areas that are hard to see without further inspection that trap and hold moisture more so than other areas of the frame. While your pictures don't look terrible, I would be interested to see the front surface of the frame outriggers, the radiator support, spare tire hoist, etc.

Judging from the looks of the frame and the hitch plug bracket next to the spare tire, I'd say there's a good chance that hoist mechanism could be toast.
