Was driving today recently got a 4 runner SR5 1995 and my check engine light turned on all the sudden and i noticed smoke so i immediately pulled over. Got super freaked out turned off car hopped out let it cool down for 20 mins opened hood coolant cap was completely off. Put it back on let it sit for a bit more and was close to home so waited 45 mins in total drove 3 mins home. Gonna go get more coolant cuz i need to anyways but anything else i should check on. Thanks!!

Did you actually get hot per the gauge?

That’s odd, if the top of the radiator is plastic, I would look for cracks. I had one pop on the freeway in a 2003 Tacoma just a crack it was hard to find but I would look for that also.

Replace the radiator cap with a Toyota one. My only experience with a aftermarket one (Duralast) was out of reluctance, and it resulted in my car loosing an expansion bottle worth of coolant during a 300 mile trip. Got a new cap and it never lost coolant.

If it's original, replace the cap.

What Trekker and Gman said. And if you think it got pretty hot you should probably change the oil.
