Just purchased a 2024 4Runner Limited for my wife and would like to get aftermarket 20x9 TRD Pro Style wheels. Since the wheels are considerably wider, Tirerack recommends a 285 tire. Based on what Iv’e read thus far, it looks like they would likely rub. Could also go with 275’s instead, but definitely don’t want any suspension mods. Anyone have any experience with this setup?

    Stock height look at 275 50 20 or 275 55 20. Or if you have a lift there's also 275 60 20.

I wasn't a fan of 20 in wheels. This is 275/55R20 on factory wheels.

Now I have TRD Offroad wheels with 285/70R17 tires

I get they have less sidewall but if your not a hardcore offroad does it matter? You see the gwagon and defender with larger wheels and they are pretty impressive offroad.

Even though our Limited is the city vehicle Mrs didn't take long to put these marks with curbs. I changed 20in wheels when our Limited had just 3800miles on ODO. Now I'm very comfortable with the way she uses the vehicles. She doesn't care at all.

I also remembered how TFL punctured the Defender tire.

I had a G-Wagen. It came with 15 inch wheels.

Then I had a Defender. It came with 16 inch wheels.

Thanks guys! This is really helpful. I’ll go with the 20x9 Pro style wheels with 275’s.

This pic reminds me how ugly the skinny tires are. Both with stock wheels and tires.

I was considering the 275/55R20 for my Limited. On the Tiresize.com site, it shows the 275/55R20 with a 6” sidewall—but your pic shows 4”. Not sure why the discrepancy?

that extra 1.5 inch of side wall doesn't sound like much, but can be felt on any road that's not F1 circuit level smooth.

Thx. Then I guess I’ll skip the 275/55’s as the sidewall measurement on it is only .2” more than the stock 245’s. No wonder it punctured.

Did this affect your odometer and speedometer readings?

    I didn't test with 275/55R20 tires.
But here's a test I did in 2023 with 285/70R17 tires on my TRD.

    Thanks!
I'm looking to get a new set of rims and tires for logging roads near me.

You really can’t stick with 20” tires as you can see above—going to a 275/55R20 only gave an extra .2” on the sidewall, and the wheel punctured on a rock. The most important thing is the sidewall height if you are going off-road and the tire size calculator will give you that number. I have a Limited with 20” tires and decided just recently to go with a 17 x 9 tire by KMC, which specializes in Toyota wheels, and probably a 255/75R17 tire. Below is the comparison. The sidewall on the 255/75R17 is 1.7” more, which will allow for better off-road ability as well as a quieter and smoother ride on the highway. There’s also the chart showing how much of a difference there may be between your actual speed and the speed on your odometer. Although I have a lift on my Limited, I don’t see a need to go wider than 255 as I’m on the streets most of the time and you have better handling and gas mileage—plus there’s no issues with the tire rubbing into the wheel well liner. Just make sure the offset on the wheels you buy are not going to give you an issue with your suspension. This gets into scrub radius so you can read all about positive and negative scrub radius online, then go to wheel size calculator and plug in the wheel offsets to see how the offset will affect your wheel in relation to the suspension.

Change 1 to my reply above about getting KMC 17 x 9’s. Decided to go with wheels I saw on Extreme Terrain’s site. They look like the 4Runner TRD rims but the middle is blacked out (no TRD badge, which is great as my Limited is blacked out) and the size is 17 x 8.

Still going with the 255/75R17 tires. Going this route because the offset on the wheels is 16 mm and perfect as it gives a zero scrub radius—same as the 15 mm on my current 20” wheels. Plus, they cost less and look just like the TRD rims. Would be interested in what you come up with.
