Recently got my 16' and really have tried to save where I can and learn the ins and out on my own without taking her to the shop for all my upgrades and minor repairs. Slowly but surely the shifter started getting resistant between gears and finally start throwing various dash lights up. After snooping around I decided to replace the NSS. Well I dont have a lift, the clearance is minimal and I am basically at a standstill at the risk of damaging the shaft I have decided to just let the local shop finish the job,...I know when im in over my head with limitations.

This being said my question is: Can I put put the car into gear and safely drive it to the shop while the NSS is loose and torn up? or do I need to have it towed? From my reading online it appeared the part is just to prevent starting this car in gear...I would of course avoid that on my way to drop it off.

    Thanks!

My NSS was dying maybe for 6 months before I gave up and decided to replace it. If you can switch gear it should be fine to drive to the shop.

You fine if you can put it in gear.

Just don't stop anywhere on the way to the shop. Once you do Murphy will show up....

If your handy it not difficult job. Use an oscillating cutter and split the old one in half. Use shaft that switch is on as a guide. Clean shaft, apply anti-seize and you’re good to go. Good luck.. btw what is cost of replacement?. IMG_2936.png

by the number of pins inside the connector, there is more to it, then just prevent start-up in-gear. when the switch isn't working properly, there are like Christmas tree lights on the dashboard.

If you can start and put into gear it should be fine. When you drop it off at the shop, if the sensor no longer detects P position, you won't be able to pull out the key. If you have pushbutton start, it'll go into accessory mode rather than fully shut off.
The sensor also provides the PRND shifter position for the gauge cluster.
