OME springs with Nitrocharger shocks too firm

I have OME 2885 590# springs on their Nitrocharger shocks. The ride is firmer than I’d like. I have read the 5100’s are firm as well. I’m curious if anyone has a first hand experience with both?

I’m also curious if the the 5100’s paired with an identical length but 500# OME spring would be closer to the softer more compliant ride of an SR5 yet offer better travel. Or would I be better off reusing the stock spring?

I do not feel that a stiffer suspension is of any benefit for the gravel and light trail use that I see. A bit of brake dive is perfectly acceptable.

 

I can’t comment on the springs since I haven’t researched lifting my runner (yet). However, if the truck hasn’t been lifted long maybe drive it a few weeks to see if it breaks in a little. Another consideration would be if you ever plan to add weight like some slid plates. That’ll help

 

As Scott said, OME suspension definitely needs to break in and will also sag a little after doing so. Sometimes it sags enough to require another alignment.

 

If you want a ride that is closer to stock but you still want a little lift, try some Eibach ride height adjustable shocks in front with your stock coil. They are a bit more positive feeling than stock (they won't bounce up and down on a bumpy road), but not overly stiff. They ride really nice on pavement and in the dirt.

 

Well. I tired out the OME 2882 spring. It is advertised as 500 lbs rate vs 590 of the 2885. The fair pavement ride is only little bit less firm so I suppose most of the ride feel is contributed by the shocks. Just a hint of brake drop. I haven’t driven on any truly rough or unpaved roads yet but think the difference will be just enough to be noticeable.
The OME nitro charger is a beefy looking shock. Everything about it is much sturdier and larger than stock SR5 stuff.
The 2885 gave about 3” of lift. The 2882 gave almost 1 3/4” lift. I added a spacer under the cup and now have 2 1/4”. This is carrying a winch with synthetic line on semi hidden Warn bumper, and alloy skids. I wish I’d gone this route from the beginning as I only wanted 2” of lift. Honestly I’d rather have a softer-yet suspension. A bit more compliant and flexible like my old TJ. I’ll run it this way and see if the shocks soften up. I’ll also update on how the lower spring rate behaves over time.

 

Thanks for posting your review of the 2882 springs, every OME suspension I have had (two) has softened a little over time. The lower lift with the 2882 sounds like something I would go for. Did you do anything for the back?

 

I used Bilstein 1” lift rear springs and OME nitro chargers. No added weight back there. The spring seems soft enough. Climbing in or setting in heavy items makes noticeable compression. The rear is visually a little higher than the front while empty.
One of my reasons for choosing OME shocks is that they come with a proper rigid plastic rod cover. Also, the rear shocks are mounted rod end up. The rod is up high and protected by the plastic bell, not down by the tire being splattered with dirt and grit.

 

I might add here that all of this on a 2018 SR5 running 265/70R17 KO2 on 8” rims. Also, the rear OME shocks are similarly firm as the front.
I guess the overnight change from stock to a firmer suspension and tires was a bit much change for my taste.
The 2” of front lift seems minor as far as alignment. I adjusted the toe a bit and all seems well.
