im happy with the resolution. I use it to see the distance to a curb, another car, or maybe a person in a parking lot. I don't need to identify the species of ants crawling behind me with the backup camera

    Hello Klinsman55.
We are also looking at the 2023 Models. Thanks for pointing this out! One thing my wife would like is the addition of heated steering wheel.

yes. Couple surprises I want expecting after literary years of researching the 5th Gen. Heated steering wheel a plus, poor backup camera image quality a disappointment.

I would also ask the dealership if you will get two keys for your new vehicle. After I spent an hour doing all paperwork and signing things and was told at end I only get one key and Toyota will notify me when I can get the other. Been 3 months and still waiting

I just picked up my 2023 ORP Saturday and it came with 2 keys. Maybe just lucky or they are finally getting supplies again. Hopefully all or the folks who only got one will be getting a second soon.

So much for Best Buy installing my Anytime Backup Camera. The guy who does installations at the Best Buy 15 miles from me is out recovering from surgery, so they had scheduled me at a store 50 miles away. I had talked with a couple of people at Best Buy about what the Anytime Backup Camera is, what's involved in installing it, directed them to Cali Raised LED's website and the PDF document they have with installation instructions. They said, sure, we can do this just like installing a regular backup camera for the same price. So I drove 50 miles to a Best Buy where the installer immediately started whining that he didn't know what this was and started scrolling through the online PDF document and said this is more complicated than a regular installation and I'll need more time to do it and I have more installations scheduled after you so you'll have to reschedule and bring it back another time. I said just give me a refund for the installation that I've paid for, handed him the receipt, and he did. I should have known better than to deal with them. I have a guy who owns a local car stereo installation shop who has looked over all the instructions and is going to do it tomorrow.

Ya. I avoid Best Buy. Over the years have found them to be mostly inept.

I found that if you replace the license plate bulbs with brighter LED bulbs it helps with the back up camera visibility at night. I just used sylvania LED’s from the auto parts store. I think they were 194’s.

I had the Cali Raised LED Anytime Backup Camera installed on my 2018 Limited yesterday by a local car stereo installer and it works great. Tack sharp image on the navigation screen and looks like a factory installation. I had to look around for the little camera for a few seconds before seeing it behind the front grill. The switch was installed in one of the 2 open spots I had to the left of the steering wheel and has a little backlight that's a different color than anything else on the dash (purple if I recall correctly) so it's easy to find. The installer was very impressed with the quality of the kit and the installation instructions from the manufacturer.

The camera sucks but thats why we have mirrors and windows! I added a screen protector on my screen and it improved the clarity but honestly I don't use my camera all that much.

    I too have a 2023 4Runner Limited.

I also have a 2016 Highlander Limited. And, the backup camera images of the new 4Runner, at night or in the rain, are grainy and inferior to those same images seen with the Highlander backup camera.

I have read several, similar, camera related backup comments where both the quality of the camera itself is mentioned, while yet other comments mention the issue is a software imagining issue which Toyota is well aware of. And, with the number of camera related comments and reviews I have read regarding the aforementioned camera issue(s); for this issue to have gone unresolved, by Toyota, for several years, is unacceptable.

For Toyota to offer an enhanced safety feature, such as backup camera and/or side view 360 viewing, then, that item should never have been marketed nor sold in commerce if the issue of substandard safety performance is allowed to remain unresolved in today’s highly competitive marketplace.

Anything of substandard quality for a Toyota, of any year, model, or trim is unrepresentative of the Toyota quality, dependability and reliability we have come to love and trust.

The rearview camera on my 2023 Prius is about as bad as the 4Runner. The camera on my previous 2018 VW GTI was significantly better then either my Toyota's.

If the camera/display works well enough to see there’s not a dog or a grandma or a picnic table behind me… for the 5 seconds I’m in reverse… I’m content.

Don’t get me wrong. 4K HD like my Sony TV would be nice but I’m not sure i really miss it?

I remember when the only reverse camera screen we had in our Tacoma was a 2 inch screen that would light up in the rear view mirror. I miss that truck. And what a luxury it was having that screen in the rear view mirror! Fancy stuff.

Oh man....I just got 2023 TRD Off Road and noticed the same grainy image where it's almost impossible to make out sidewalk from pavement. It's horrendous. I took it into the dealership since it was still under warranty and they ordered a new camera. Not sure if it's going to change anything if this is how it is. But I do remember when I first go the car it wasn't like this. With recent rains there must be some issue like moisture getting in or connection is not good. If new camera doesn't work I will have to figure out alternative way. My 2014 Jeep never had this issue. What's up with Toyota?

    Things I would like:

-software re-flash to eliminate the front camera gray area
-software re-flash to restore rear camera resolution
-ability to select rear camera view on demand (the cam button only shows front and mirrors on 360 package)

    OR

aftermarket offering of replacement cameras that have decent resolution

    my '23 4runner - potato camera
wifes '24 GH - HD resolution, amazing difference

Yeah. I have same issue with my 2023 ORP. Worst ever. Of all things that can go wrong they had to put this aweful camera on this car? From Japan tahara factory blah blah and this iz it? Isn't Japan electronic king? What a shame. It's dangerous driving with this back up camera. Really pathetic.

on my 2021 4R my camera was clear then after a few years it started to look like the pics that you have posted.. i cleaned and polished the lens from the small faint scratches from diving/car washes perhaps.. anyhow, it worked and it is clear again and made a big improvement..

I'm coming from a 2006 Tacoma with no backup camera to my now 2024 4Runner SR5. I'm like a pig in slop
having a backup camera. Just yesterday I was backing into a spot by my Dentists office and a little old lady
stepped off the curb right behind me as I was backing in. I helps to keep your head on a swivel and use your mirrors along
with the backup camera to avoid unfortunate pedestrians.

Hope your efforts will pay off and get their attention. I have a long driveway I have to maneuver in reverse to get out into the street and this awful camera is not helping. I ordered this solar powered wireless backup cam from Amazon and will try it out. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0DGKFPTXJ?ie=UTF8&th=1 Hopefully it will do the trick. I think it's worth a try.

So I installed AutoVox solar powered back up camera and thought I resolved the issue. Not. The images are clear and back up camera automatically turns on when turning on engine but the grid lines that show up on the images have no relation to the actual edge of the car. It's just random grid lines and off center that using it to back out I almost ran into the side fence. Also the screen takes up too much space and makes the whole dashboard cluttered when only few seconds are utilized to back out. So my only hope is that new factory OEM camera order by the dealership will solve the issue. And hopefully that will solve the dynamic grid line issue as well. As of now I have no dynamic grid line. Nothing turns with the steering wheel. Just a static blue box. This is really a low tech. Not sure why they bothered in the first place. Rear view mirror and side mirrors will do much better.

I had issues at night with images unusable. I took it to Toyota dealership and they replaced it under warranty and it's much better. Grid is calibrated as well. The only thing missing is dynamic grid lines that turn with steering wheel but they told me that's not available on 5th gen. Still, it's acceptable now.
