    Hi there,

We just bought a 2021 4runner nightshade and our insurance won't accept the factory immobilizer that comes with it. They want an aftermarket version. Does anyone k ow why this would be? Thanks

I've never heard of it outside of Hyundai's and Kia's looking for insurance (but that is for those that didn't come with an immobilizer at all) - only your insurance company can answer why.

If I had a choice, I would not want to deal with insurance requiring additional aftermarket electronic bits that could fail with no upside to me. (and then you'd have to deal with an aftermarket fob, risk of quirks if battery is disconnected, etc.)

Edit: This post was made assuming insurance is referring to an aftermarket security system with a starter kill such as Compustar.

You can get an immobilizer that requires you to breathe into it if that's what you mean.

Factory immobilizer takes about 10 min to hack, maybe less.

Recent-year 4Runners (and Tacomas) are classified as high-risk for theft by some insurance companies, so you either get a tracker installed or face a high premium surcharge.

The ultimate immobilizer, put it under your dash. Just don'[t forget to disconnect it before you start her up in the morning.

My insurance went up by 1300 a year because they said 4 Runners are easily to steal and desirable. Gave me 3 options:
    1. do nothing and pay extra
    2. install car alarm get 50% discount on the increase
    3. install an aftermarket immobilizer for no increase. I am looking around the cheapest in Canada for such hidden immobilizer is $1400.

Sucks, insurance should not be allowed to increase so much. Ridiculous.

Recent years 4Runners are easy to steal because of poor security of wireless keys, but Canada specifically refuses to do anything about organized crime shipping stolen cars out of Montreal. So your insurance hike is less about 4Runner and more about Canada not doing anything about car theft.

Hilariously, Canadian Justice minister's had 3 cars stolen in Ottawa (Capital city, close to Montreal).

I would start by shopping around at other insurance providers to see how other prices look.

If you're in Canada I would suggest to get some sort of theft protection for 4Runner regardless of insurance.

In the US, they're not. Insurance is regulated at the state level and the Dept of Insurance, Consumer Affairs, Corporations, etc regulates the amount an insurer can raise rates. It has to be based on losses, the ins company has to show or justify increases. Increases are based on the companies' ability to pay claims.

That should change for Canadians soon enough I guess, lol.

Yeah my neighbors up in Canada particularly in Montreal/Ottawa/Toronto have a huge problem up there with theft and vehicles going to South Africa. I have seen a few CBC shows called Marketplace here in Detroit with a few episodes on the problem. It’s unreal to me the government can’t stop this particularly when loading on a ship in the St. Lawrence Seaway. It’s shameful really. They just let the vehicles slowly get loaded into ships and go overseas. Heck the Marketplace investigation team went to South Africa and showed some these stolen vehicles driving around with Ontario plates by the “new owners in South Africa” So the South African government lets this take place too.

Ironically one episode showed how European mandates are more strict with technology to prevent theft for vehicles sold in Europe. So I feel like manufacturers are in on this also. If anyone can see the show Marketplace on CBC it’s very informative on this whole Canadian car theft issue.
