But they are in fact making a manual version of the 4th gen Taco that shares large number of parts including the engine and 8 speed auto with the 6th gen 4R.

True. Aside from a different drive-shaft, the work should already be done.

I think some would say the 4th gen Tacoma 6-speed actually is an afterthought. They’ve had some unexpected failures for a gearbox that’s not a new design. Also, the engine is derated on the 6-speed, which shows Toyota feels a need protect it from the increased horsepower.

If the 4runner ever gets an MT 6-speed, it would be near certain it will be the same one in the tacoma, and with de-rated power output as well.

To make it clear I am not delusional. I do not expect a MT to make its way back to the 4Runner. As much as I would welcome that I know these days the number of row-ye-own-gear people is dwindling, and the intersection of people who want manuals and people who want 4Runners is even smaller.

Yeah, even if they made a perfectly sorted out 6 speed for the 4runner, I would hesitate getting one for myself. I like the idea of MTs more on small vehicles, not so much huge cars. And you’d be giving up a lot of controlability in off road situations.

The runner is the first, well 2nd auto we have bought. The Rav4 prime was the first, then the runner. I had to put in a special request for my 2017 taco manual, the previous 2 I found on the lot, and we had VWs until they went to the sequential shifter and the sales person tried to convince e it was the same as a manual, then we bought a Subaru instead. I may have bought a runner sooner had they offered a manual, now I’m not sure I would want one.

While we're at it, lets bring back locking hubs. Who ELSE is old enough to remember when you had to get OUT OF THE VEHICLE to lock the hubs so you could put it in 4 wheel drive?

Toyotas especially need these due to the fact that they do not know how to resolve the needle bearing issue

My first vehicle had these, a squarebody Chevy. I kept a pair of channel locks in the glove box because sometimes they'd freeze in the winter.

If I recall correctly from the videos last year, the manual gearbox in the Taco has a torque capacity just a few lbs beyond what the 2.4 is rated at.

With such a small safety margin, no thanks.

This is why I don't beg for manual's to come back. Back in the day you could get more torque and even better MPG's. Now that engineering has caught up and a automatic can match (and exceed) what a manual does. No thanks. Plus it's not as cool anymore to row my own gears.

The only real added bonus: It will stop a lot of car thieves if they see it. A lot of people can't drive a manual.

But why? Tell me why you would want a manual 4x4.

Aside from being able to be in control of the rig on road better, usually manuals have extra low first gear compared to autos that allows deeper crawl ratio. Both the Wrangler JL and Bronco have that option. Comes in handy with 35 inch and up tires.

They were eliminated because Toyota moved away from solid front axles, and it costs a few dozen dollars extra per unit and people were too lazy to get out and get muddy, never mind the fact that it was the most reliable axle coupling method to date.

Ford Superduties still come with them on their Dana super 60 and similar SFAs. They tried to us a dummy passenger side a few years back and customers balked.

    You do you.

I drive some mountain roads regularly. My manual cars(I have 2 including a JL 6 speed, well actually 3 if I count my old corolla that my kid is currently learning on) are a lot more easy to drive on the downhills than autos.

fords have the new auto/lock/free hubs. friends new 250 has them, really best of both worlds.

auto if you want to be lazy and let the solenoid engage the locking hubs.

manual for when the solenoid dies and you can manually put the hubs into locked or free.

It's a shame they just can't get their motors and transmission right on the SDs. the 6.7 is the 6.7 with all of its temperamental tendencies, the 7.3 and 6.8 are having ongoing lifter and other oil pump related problems, and the 10R100 and 10R140 are still not quite sorted out after 6 MYs of production.

There were guys who could not get an allocation without a moonroof in the 5th Gen. I can’t imagine how it would be to get a manual if even offered.

That was certainly the case on the pacific coast. I guess it will vary by region and you have no choice if you are in the wrong region unless you do a road trip to hunt one down.
