I finally scored a 4Runner. I knew what I was getting into, both bad (archaic; low tech) and good (archaic, low tech), with this purchase. I'm pleasantly surprised at how impressed I am with the vehicle and how enjoyable it is.

I'm slowly immersing into the off-roading scene. The stock Bridgestone Dueler H/Ts performed reasonably well on pavement and actually were much better than expected in rough terrain, although I wisely avoided mud. I knew the Duelers would not be adequate in winter. Furthermore, I wanted to up the game and after considerable (enjoyable) research I went with Toyo Open Country AT3s. These tires (pictured) look great, are fantastic in rough terrain and deep snow, and are reasonably quiet. However, I found the ATs brought out the weaknesses of the 4Runner on paved roads. Most notably handling, ride (stiffness) and... gasp... fuel economy. More so than expected. I was compelled to accept that realistically 90% or more of driving will be on paved roads. Winter was also coming and the AT tires were not going to effectively/safely handle packed snow, ice and extreme cold (commonly -20; often -30 and lower). I live in Nortern Canada. I went with Blizzaks. Prudent decision. I have encountered many hours of ice in nasty cold weather on remote highways. The Blizzaks handle decently (a little squishy), provide exceptional traction and control, and the impact on fuel consumption is minimal.

I'm leaning towards the Michelin Defender or the new Bridgestone Dueler AT Ascent for upcoming non-winter months. I know Defenders well and am certain that handling (KDSS is awesome), ride and fuel economy will be improved compared to when the Deulers were used and therefore overall vehicle expectations for daily driving will be vastly exceeded. I actually sorta liked the stock Dueler H/Ts and early feedback on the Ascent is promising. Whichever tire I go with will hit some relatively mild rough stuff and both tires are suitable for shoulder-season snow conditions.

Update: I went with Bridgestone Dueler A/T Ascent tires (third and fourth pictures) for use during non-winter seasons. Early impressions are very favourable. With these tires on pavement the vehicle tracks and handles nicely, is comfortable, is quite quiet and there's barely any negative impact on fuel economy. Winter came back today so I was able to try them on snow-covered roads and they seem adequate enough to run during shoulder seasons when snow conditions are mild and it's not cold. I spent a weekend roaming around in some rough terrain and the Ascents performed almost on par with gnarlier AT tires. They were excellent in loose dirt, rocks, gravel, and mud. I'm very pleased with these tires!

I’m with the Defender LTX M/S. On my third set. BUT just lifted my 2015 last year after 10 years of ownership so when buying my next set going with Toyo Open Country A/T iii. They get good mileage also, so if you want a more aggressive look, you might try them.
