Issues with Toyota Crush Washer (blue one)

I changed my oil today for the 2nd time on our 2024 4runner (currently at almost 5,000 miles).

I did a break-in oil change at around 780 miles and didn't have any issues other than the stuck oil washer that I was able to knock off with a flat-head. This go around, the oil crush washer was "baked on" (please see pic "Oil Drain Bolt.jpg"). I had to use my finger nail to scrap most of the "fiber" part of the washer from the washer from the oil pan and the oil bolt - even then I couldn't get it completely off as I was concerned I didn't want to risk scratching by using a tool to scrape the remainder off. The blue stuff was completely baked onto the bolt and oil pan. Seems like a pain to have to do this all the time and the scraping from the oil pan and bolt could compromise the seal with time. I didn't notice any leaking.

I'm not a fan of these washers. Anyone else having this issue? My old Infiniti QX4 had a simple aluminum crush washer that never got stuck and would easily come off.

Did you purchase direct from a known Toyota dealer? There are lots of fake and knock-off parts for sale on Amazon and ebay etc.

 

I just checked (found email for purchase in March 2024)... Sure enough, this was one of the few things I did buy from Amazon. Advertised "Brand: Toyota" "Genuine Toyota - Oil Drank Plug Gaskets (QTY10)."

Even had an OEM label on the package.

Never again Amazon! Fortunately, everything else (except for 3rd party accessories that aren't critical) have been purchased through the dealer. Very frustrating this can be advertised in such a way it makes me feel confident that it was OEM (wording, reviews, etc...)

I'll purchase a bag of 10 from the dealership and be sure to upload the difference on this thread for the forum. I'll clean the pan and plug the best I can and this will have to wait until tomorrow since the dealer is closed.

 

If a genuine Toyota washer doesn't stick to the pan, it's probably fake...........lol

 

You can buy copper or crush oil drain plug washers to fit your drain bolt from Autozone, O'Reilly, etc. They work just fine and you will not leak a drop of oil if you torque them properly and do not re-use them.

 

Yeah I am avoiding Amazon a lot more. I ordered some diabetic blood check supplies from them. The label, box manufacturer etc looked identical until received. My Dad called Accucheck the name of the company and was told the product he received was intended for the Phillipines market and not for sale in the USA. We all get caught up in a situation where it’s easy to buy from Amazon and sometimes cheaper. I will be cutting back big time on Amazon.

 

^So in your case it wasn't counterfeit, just intended for a different market.

 

Yeah I guess but in my view a misleading sale. Amazon has different apps for different countries. Why are diabetic supplies for the Philippines in a USA warehouse to go to USA customers? Then the strips that come to my Dad with same specs do not work in his machine. Maybe not counterfeit but shady nonetheless.

 

You could put on a Fumoto or similar oil-change valve and not worry about it, but you still have more of them? Swap out plug gaskets for aluminum or copper 'crush' washers. I noticed the sticky washers you're talking about, slight concern when I saw it also.

 

That's often how discounts are achieved, because wholesale markups are lower in some countries. An example would be Toyota LF transfer case fluid sold in European packaging, or Duracell batteries in Korean packaging. But yeah if the test strips are incompatible with US machines, then that's a miss in the product listing, a bit like receiving an appliance with Asian 220V plug with round prongs.

Take the time to leave a review to let others know it’s a fake and not OEM. It’ll be a warning to others.

I hate Amazon for that same issue; to the point where I avoid 3rd party sellers there now. Amazon can’t police them and there are so many fake stuff being sold.

 

My gaskets look exactly like the ones on the left. (FAKE!)

Amazon is flooded with counterfeit chineese auto parts.. why buy from there when you can buy from dealer for the same price, and be guaranteed that it is original....

Bought 10 for 12$ from my dealer, for our Camry, have Fumoto on 4R, doing the drain bolt is such a pain after fumoto, thinking of putting one on the camry as well.

Toyota makes these washers to last lol. In my case, original washer was stuck on for over a decade on a 2006 sienna, and I’m still on my original stuck washer on an 18 highlander and the 21 4runner. Now that I think about it, the blue is probably an adhesive that sets at engine temp, which explains why they hang on for so long.

In any case I’ve never had a leak from that bolt. I clean the surfaces well, then lap the bolt and washer together by lightly tightening and loosening a few times to about half the final torque. If it feels grit free, then it gets final torque. If not, clean again and repeat.

Anybody with a stuck washer should count their blessings. One less thing to worry about!

 

I've changed my oil 15 times since my stripped skid plate bolt incident with the dealer back in 2016.
They didn't (to the best of my knowledge) install a new washer but, so far it hasn't leaked and i've just turned over 109,000 miles.

As far as diabetic supplies, Accucheck stopped being covered through Costco Pharmacy. I now deal directly with Sunmark TrueMetrix. Info provided by me and my PA lets them mail the supplies to me before I need them.

RockAuto so far has treated me well for other brands but when I’m willing to drive in and deal with the parts counter the Toyota filters + gasket included is quite competitive in price.

 

I got these at Advance Auto where I picked up the Wix oil filter I use. Two oil changes so far, and nothing has welded to the pan or the bolt...
