    Hello everyone! Currently shopping for new wheels and tires for my 2020 5th gen 4Runner. Currently running stock wheels on General Grabber ATX 265/70/17s. Wanting to upgrade to Method 705s and debating if I want to go wider or skinner as far as tires go….really happy with the ATX and want to go same tires again. I have a coastal off-road steel front bumper w/winch, and a victory 4x4 steel rear bumper w/swingouts that hold 2 Jerry cans and my spare. Also have JBA UCAs and running Bilstein 6112s in the front and 5160s in the rear. Definitely going to re-gear and CMC/BMC - no questions there. Want to hear your thoughts on your favorite wheel and tire combos!

    I watched the video on pie cutters vs wide. Seems to me that pie cutters act more like a tank tread when aired down which add more surface area contact which is what helps go go.i can go find the link if you need it. But wider looks cooler.

    Sounds like you’ve had good success with current wheel/tire set-up, why change?
    I’m real happy with stock wheels and Michelin defenders in stock size.

    Yes I’m happy with my current set up and my suspension is pretty dialed in. Just looking for a little more ground clearance and wanting bigger tires in general for better off-road capability and to fill up my wheel well. Considering 255/85/17 or 285/70/17.

    Hey you got a great setup, solid tire, suspension and UCA choices. I almost bought Grabbers. Same can be said for those Method wheels, do them with ATX’s. I believe they are 8.5” wide so you’d be at maximum width recommended for 255-265. I think 275/70R17 is your number since you’re already game to invest in a BMC like a legend.

    RevTek 3" front- 2" rear leveling, JBA uca's, LED interior lights, Cooper 275-70-17 AT3 LT
    Wheels are such a personal preference item, but I will say 0 offset is my favorite. 8.0-8.5 inch width, 275-70-17 is probably my favorite tire size, just the right amount of sidewall, in most cases 10 ply rating for rocks. You already have a great tire, Grabbers are good. Suspension on your truck is good, the re-gear is a good idea depending on what's your 'thing' to do with your 4Runner. Sounds like a nice set-up you have.

    We have had the 255/75’s for about 35,000 miles KO2, no regrets. Minimal impact on fuel economy over stock, a bit over 32” so no mods required.

    If you're planning to regear and you off road often I'd recommend going bigger on tire size. Some options to consider:

    34x11 (285/75/17 is a common size)
    35x11.5 (offered by a a couple manufacturers)
    35x10.5 (even more rare. Offered by Kenda. Also Mickey Thompson as a 255/85/17)

    Since you're asking for opinions I'll say I currently run the RRW RR6-H 17x8.5-12 with 285/75/17 Falken A/T4W's. Works great and I like this setup a lot. They have a -25 offset option that I should have gone with though...

    Considering adding bead locks to these but I'll probably wait until I upgrade to 35s.

    If I could do it again I'd just have Trailbuiltoffroad.com send me some Method Bead Grips 703's 17x9-12 wrapped in some Baja Boss AT 35x12.5r17 D load.
    Ships with the tires installed and balanced with new TPMS sensors installed.

    255/70-17 = 31.1 x 10
    265/70-17 = 31.6 x 10.4
    275/70-17 = 32.2 x 10.8
    285/70-17 = 32.7 x 11.2

    These are the sizes available for the General Grabber AT/X in a 17" wheel that are within your constraints. I personally love the wider tire look, i run 285s on my daily driver and have 305s on the wifes daily driver. Wider is way better lookin IMO. If you have the front end up +2.5" over stock, i would pin the inner wheel wells forward, remove the mud flap, and run the 285s in a heart beat as long as your offset doesnt cause problems.
    I like the wider look and prefer the 305/50-20s on a 20" wheel, boy thats a hot setup and just barely bigger than the stock tire.

    One thing to consider is weight of the wheels and tires. Trd pro wheels weigh 25lbs(which is pretty light weight) standard load all terrain 265 70 17 tires weigh around 42lbs.

    If you keep the weight down you won't notice them so much and not really have to re gear.

    My setup is rrw wheels (28 lbs) and goodyear territory c rated 285 70 17 (46 lbs). I have a kdmax 10.0 tune. It downshifts less(hold gears) and has more pep then stock. So I never thought of rear gearing.

    Falken Wildpeak 255/80 17. I have to admit the 285's look cooler, but by every other metric, i.e. traction in rain and snow and weight, 255's are the better choice. I spent 6 weeks researching tires. Made my feeble brain hurt.

    Most, yes. It’s kind of a specialized size for off roaders.

    Don’t be afraid of E load. They typically aren’t considerably heavier than C load and ride fine.

    Plus the more tire sidewall there is the more inherent “cushion” you’ll have. For instance a heavy rig with C load 35s will almost have too much sidewall deflection. E is good to go, D is ideal if you’re not incredibly heavy.

    Loving the steel wheel look!! Was considering this as well. Been looking into Methods - heard good things about their bead grip tech and they are popular for obvious reasons. But there’s something about steel wheels. Simple and timeless. What’s your off-road experience with them? Do they really add a ton of extra weight?
