Failed smog due to high HC in CA. '95 V6 130k mi

Wasnt sure if this was the right place or if I should post in the 2nd gen. New member. I just bought a 1995 4Runner 4x4 V6 with 130k miles for a 2nd vehicle on a bit of a whim, and my daily driver is a Tacoma. However living in an apartment and only having one parking space means i have to find street parking everyday and its turning into a PITA. So unfortunately im probably going to sell the 4runner, but i want to make sure the next owner can drive it on the road.

I bought the 4runner on CL. Got a great deal on it (now I know why) and it failed one section of the Smog test 25mph HC's. The 15 mph was BARELY within the limit, and everything else seems fine.


I changed the plugs and wires at the recommendation of the smog techs and went back, and they said the numbers were pretty much the same. It also has a fresh oil change.

Any advice??

Since HC is usually a sign of bad ignition, and you've already changed plugs and wires, next step is the distributor. If the distributor is fine, then it could be leaning out due to a bad injector or improper timing. Might wanna run a compression test to be safe, too.

 

Did you ever get your truck smogged in Ca? I’m in a similar situation.

 

37 hc max thats crazy.......what county? In the rural areas the max is 100 and 120 depending on year. I noticed the tech wrote you down at 8 deg timing. The spec is 10 I would try that and some premium fuel.
