I was a self proclaimed Transmission killer. Every early car i owned the transmission eventually died under 100k, changing fluid often or not at all, didn't matter. However I have not had a single issue with my last 2 cars (14 Mazda-3 & 19 4Runner), and the only thing i can attribute besides just being better transmissions is my remote start which i use year round.

And actually in my 04 Acura the transmission went at 100k and i added a remote start just after, and it went to 300k no issues. I think there is something to warming up the transmission before driving.

Some people don't know about cars or have a mechanic they trust. Dealer will just strip all your bolts selling things they aren't going to do. Hard not to get a little education before searching for techs. Need a small idea so you don't get shucked.

My 2017 SR5 tranny required replacing at 48,000 miles thru dealer and my 7/100,000 extended warranty. The unique Flex Lock Torque Converter components failed inside the tranny valve body.
A problem Toyota has had for many years in lots of models. Research tranny shudder or chatter.
Cost Toyota $5k for my new tranny with TC.
4 runners share the A750 tranny with Tacomas.

Yes! 2015 4x4 112,000 and the transmission is going out! Dealer wants $6700 to replace (they don't repair). We're taking to a couple more shops for estimates on repairs. Oil and transmission fluid changed at regular, Toyota recommended intervals. All maintenance has been preformed based on Toyota recommendations. Never towed a trailer and seldom engage 4WD, mostly because it is AWD. The shop also found a small oil leak in the engine. Very disappointed in this 4Runner given my 2005 never had one problem after 10 yrs and 150k miles. I'll probably get another, though, assuming the new 2.4 liter turbocharged engine gets good reviews over the next few years.

A friend had his transmission replaced with catastrophic results from an independent transmission shop, so I really don’t subscribe to the independent shops are the gold standard in automotive maintenance.

Following because unfortunately i think something isn't right with my 5th gen's transmission/TConverter. Vibrates and hops while accelerating 40-50mph, sometimes i think I hear a noise when the FlexLock engages/disengages. And on a hilly highway, from 3rd gear, the RPM would go up by 500 before shifting back into 5th when going up a steep hill. Then, today while entering the highway, I lost power when it shifted into 4th at 60 mph, like I was braking. I don't accelerate very hard at all, I keep it around 2,000 RPM :( had a drain and fill done 20k miles ago. I don't get it. It still shifts very smoothly and punctually. It would be devastatingly ironic if my first Toyota has a bad trans, considering I had Dodges and Fords my whole life without a single transmission problem LOL

    What's FlexLock?

How many total miles on your 11 year-old transmission? What fluid did you use 20k miles ago?

Flexlock is Toyotas proprietory torque converter lock up and release system. It uses a presure pulse from the tranny valve body to modulate the TC lock up. Kind of like slipping a manual clutch in high gear when driving too slow for that gear.
I will attach some screen shots I made when researching on line my shudder/chatter.

^Ah ok, so it's a deprecated marketing name for partial lockup, which pretty much every automaker does for at least a decade now.

Other guy answered your FlexLock question haha. I don't remember what fluid was used but they noted that the original was quite clean. The only fluid that was somewhat dirty was my front diff, but they said that's expected. I believe the shop used genuine Toyota but I will check the invoice later (if i remember). 130k miles on the trans. It started acting noticeably funny about 10,000 miles ago or so. Drives better in warm weather

Yep that's exactly how mine is acting right now. When i'm keeping up with the wild city traffic or feeling spirited, no fuss. When i want to take it easy, it acts a bit confused. I will reset the computer at some point and see if that helps. It seems like maybe it learned awkward driving habits from inconsistent drivers o_O last year i did have my timing chain replaced (bad from factory) and sometimes i wonder if the trans might have lost a little fluid and they forgot to top off

My dealer tried changing fluid and did something with the tranny control module (reflash might have been said) first. Their driving test demonstrated it did not solve shudder. Then dealer submitted to Toyota to replace Torque Converter. Returned my runner and about 2 weeks later I got the call the TC arrived and to bring in my runner. (got a loaner RAV hybrid).
After replacing the TC they drove it and said it was fixed. A few days of my driving and the shudder was back. I waited till shudder was unmistakable (about 2 more weeks) then took it back to dealer.
This time dealer requested new tranny, complete with torque converter, and I drove my runner till tranny came in. Dropped off runner and picked up my loaner RAV. A week or so later I picked up my runner. Mileage was about 50,000 then. The tranny fixed the shudder. I had purchased the Platinum extended warranty (SA) so Toyota paid everything.
I had purchased the Platinum SA because of the several airbags and many electronic gizmos. I never would never have thought it would be needed for a tranny.

So I have an update. In my case I believe it's just the computer thank God, cuz we really can't afford any major repairs or worries right now with our baby due next month. I had the battery unplugged for 4 hours 2 weeks ago. I have been checking the trans temp after driving in cold and warm days, and it was never too hot for me to leave my hand on (don't ask how me and my beach ball belly managed to get under there). It's a totally different vehicle after a simple reset. Still no shuddering, hopping or hesitation, it's responsive and just not... funky like before haha. Also ever since resetting it and taking the highway to work instead, I went from getting barely 250-300 miles in a tank to over 400. I drive about 100 miles a week. I have never seen it that high, and I have a 3" lift with BFG's! I'm gonna blame the gOoFy city drivers for confusing this poor transmission/computer
