Hey all, ran into an issue this weekend. I was pulling my buddy out who got stuck pretty badly, on the last attempt as I was pulling RPMs revved way higher than the first few attempts, got back in the truck a few minutes later to move it and have no gears forward or reverse. With the truck running I can run through all of the gears without using the clutch no grinding or strange sounds. Dual case with triple stick set up, when I put it in any combination of gears I have the same issue, as of the case were in neutral. Already expecting to pull Trans and case out, just looking for any input as to what could have broken so I can get it back on the trail asap. Thanks for any help.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
It sounds like your clutch is toast and is not engaging. The clutch plate/pressure plate is probably worn out or damaged. If you can row the gears without pressing the clutch pedal then that's probably the culprit.

That would be the best case scenario. Didn’t notice any signs or wear before that, but good place to start looking when I pull it apart. One thing to add, I do hear a slight bearing noise when it’s in reverse. Noise goes away when I push the clutch in.

Damn, that sucks. But these are the things we do to help out a buddy. Have you tried to put it in 4WD to rule out rear axle issues? Best of luck to you brother. Please keep us posted on what the issue was.

Nothing in 4x4 either. I’ll definitely keep you updated.

Hope you didn’t shear off the splines…

So, engine running means the flywheel must be turnin…assuming the clutch hydraulics is functioning as it should means the rest of the clutch assembly is working…

in 4x the transfer comes downstream of the trans so…I’m thinking overheat condition something went with the input side of the transmission?

did you say you were going to pull the transmission? Kudos to you brother. I consider myself a solid Jr mechanic but know my limits. Im always impressed by people who pull transmissions or engines.

The first time I pulled an engine was on an 87 4Runner. It's quite easy with a hoist and basic tools. I think I only broke 1 connector. Engine hoists and trans jacks are pretty cheap considering the price of paying someone else to do it.

These older ones are pretty straightforward. Fortunately my buddy just did his transfer case, transmission, and an engine swap recently on his, so his knowledge will help me out immensely to get this thing pulled and figured out.

That’s pretty much my theory right now. I’m guessing broken or stripped imput shaft.

I wish you good luck in repairs, may it be something simple like a blown out clutch disk!

Thanks! Fingers crossed on the clutch. That would be the best case scenario for sure.
