General question - can a novice switch out the factory headlights to LED headlights fairly easily? I have a 3 week old '19 SR5 Premium. I am reading through these posts and see a lot of lingo / terminology I am not familiar with. I changed the bulbs when they broke (factory) in my '05 limited with no problem. I would imagine this might be more complex b/c it's a change in the lights and not just a bulb? I don't want to bite off more than I can chew, but I can't imagine this could be that hard.

I changed some lights, tires and tinted windows...mind blowing huh

it is super easy and there are a lot of vidoes on youtube to check out if you get stuck or just want to see the process start to finish. Most all manufactures have it so it is quick and painless as most all are plug and play so you don't have to worry with cutting and splicing wires. And hey if you run into a spot there are a lot of us that have done them to either HID or LED that can offer some support. FYI you are still just changing the bulb, there might be a little extra to it but that is the basics of it, if you have done it before you already know how to do 90% of the install

WOW! Thanks so much for your response and vote of confidence. I really appreciate it. I have a few projects on my list to take on with my new 4Runner and this is definitely one of them. Once I bite the bullet I will share how it went.

Just got my kit in the mail. Noticed it came with 2 relays on the wiring harness, yet all the install write ups I've seen don't mention direct battery connections. Is using the relays optional, or is there concern the factory harness can't supply enough current for the HID ballast?

I did not use the relays or wire direct to the batteries. I messaged Danny with XenonDepot on TacomaWorld and he verified I did not need the harness:

You can use them if you want there is no harm in it. That said my kit was the 35W, if you went with a 55w kit I would probably use the additional harness.

I didn't use the relays either, just followed the write up. No issues so far.

Which did you do the 35 or the 55 watt without the relays?

Has anyone tried the 55 watt HID set? I wonder if there is an enough different to pay more for the 55's.

I'm not sure the cost difference between the 2 but the 35W is outstanding

With how bright mine are I could not imagine how bright the 55's are. It took me a few nights to get my lights adjusted correctly. Before they were right, people constantly brighted me since they are bright enough it looks like the brights are on. Another 20 watts would be crazy bright.

Yes, HID are brighter than LED, but a good LED bulb is still miles brighter than the stock halogens. Most do not recommend HID bulbs for high-beams since they take 10-15 seconds to warm up into full brightness. Not useful for brief high-beam use. Also I don't think anyone has managed to make HID bulbs friendly for the DRL mode (4Runner DRL lights are the high beams at low power).

Xenon Depot now has an HiD kit that works with day time running lights for high beams.

I believe you mean LED, not HID. Very few companies recommend HID bulbs in high-beams due to their delayed warm up cycle.

These are the DRL drivers. They only work with the Xenon Depot LED bulb kits. I have them on my truck and like them a LOT! DRL functions as it should, with only a slightly perceptible flicker (more of a fluorescent light "hum", it's barely noticeable unless you're looking for it). The full-power high beams are very bright.

I'm very happy with my lighting setup.

4R Front.jpg the DLR for my 2012 TE are just the orange lights at the bottom of the fender to the insides of the fog lights as far as i know, which seems weird. so should i even bother getting an HID hi beam DRL driver since they presumably don't double up, and just swap the hi beam bulb w an LED? the 10-13 TE seems like such a weird outlier when it comes to the 5th gen.

Interesting, I was curious about how the lights changed in 2014. If those lights down there are your DRLs, your low beams and high beams are probably single function and you don't need to worry about dimming them. The best way to determine that would be to check the lights yourself to make sure what is what!

Also, be sure the lights you get for the low beams are fully recommended for the 10-13 4Runner. Since they are reflector (and not projector) you REALLY want to make sure you don't get bulbs that have uncontrollable glare. You want to maintain factory optics, pattern and cutoff. Hope they can help you select a kit that works for you!

I am gonna check them for sure, I just realized after some research (and actually LOOKING at my lights haha) that the light arrangement/setup is different for the TE/year that I have. Im glad i didn't order any lights yet, sheesh. I'm still very new to all this, so I really appreciate all the help!

Thanks for the info everyone! Xenon Depot has a 4th sale, I got this kit and Phillips high beams(whiteish halogens) for 136 :)
So I have a speed bit, a step bit, hole saw and a knockout set. Anyone try the knock out set? should make a cleaner cut
