re-installing the 4R skid kit in the rain, following fluid service (during my kids nap time, and wife’s nail appointment).

She's running! Got to give it to Magnuson, their kit is built for DYI. 67 step by step pictures for the tune and 290 for the hardware. Everything is in two boxes, all you need is tools. Need to throw some props out to "Jailbreak overland" for his step by step walkthrough vids on tubeyou.

The skid included 4 long bolts, which fit fine in the front with the included spacers, but were too long in the rear locations, so I just used the OEM bolts there. Also installed the Tacoma engine skid I previously trimmed and painted:



Disclaimer for newbies: I don't recommend aluminum skid plates for off-road use. My 4Runner is a pavement pounder that may see deep snow and the occasional road debris (wood pallet, Hino truck grille, tire carcass, paving stone...). Don't follow my example if you're building a trail rig.

Took it to the dealership for Service #2, oil change #1. A bit tardy, wife had put about 17,000 km on it, but mostly highway.

We already have our studded winter tires on (on new OffRoad wheels) and the dealership was able to get the TPMS sensors to talk to the computer; something I couldn't get them to do.

Went downtown afterwards for lunch and found a twin.

 

Hate the moonroof, never used it. Besides, it only covers a little section on each side. Still have most of the sunroof for people that use it

 

Was going to use FJ grab handles, they were to square looking and did not match the other grab handles. I used Lexus grab handles, they matched closes to the 4Runner. Decided to go with dark gray since it will most likely get dirty.

 

Just curious - since you went with Chineseum, why not the version with the oil filter access panel?

I have to drop the skids once a year for rustproofing, and I usually time it together with one of the oil changes, so a lack of access door isn't a big deal. I prefer to open the filter cap without draining it with the spigot.

 

Increased my smiles per gallon. Test drive complete.

 

I get that. Same reason I didn't end up keeping the CTH skid I had earlier on. I may have gone the route you did had I known about that one you got.

Curious, though - I was looking at your 4R posts when you first picked it up - the SR5 came with a lever actuated transfer case in 2010?

 

my 2011 SR5 has a lever.

 

Everyone thinks the rear bolts are too long . They’re not. They just have crud in them . Run a 38 caliber brass bore brush through the holes and the long bolts fit fine .

 

Oil changed and installed the Fumoto valve to make future oil changes even easier.

 

Huh. I never knew the earlier SR5 models had the TC shift lever. I guess they went away from that to the dial in 2014 when they changed the body style...

 

My 2011 has a lever too. The changed happened when they updated the model in 14.

 

So from 2010 - 2013 the only model without the lever was the Limited?
