Steering Wheel Suddenly Off Center?

Just back from a trip to Utah. Truck ran great, got ~22-23 mpg overall. We did some minor off road trails, none of which required 4WD and none of the trails had anything that could have bent, bashed or damaged anything. On the way home, I noticed the steering wheel Off center to the right. Prior to this it was perfectly centered. (pic attached) There are no indications of anything wrong. No shimmy, shake or vibration. Steering tracks true (1/2 mile w/both hands off the wheel stayed in lane) No new or unusual noises. Before I take it to the alignment shop what should I check?

Not sure what your cause is but the steering wheel on my ‘07 Sport has always been very difficult to get/keep centered.

 

Swap the front tires and see if the problem moves to the other side. Long time ago I took my car in for an alignment and afterward it still pulled to one side. The tire shop swapped the tires and the problem went to the other side. They said the tire's belt had slipped. Swapped with the spare and the problem went away. A cheap thing to try.

 

I had a similar situation: TL;DR just get an alignment. It's fine.

Leaving Palo Duro Canyon last year my steering wheel was about 25 degrees off center. Did some pretty hard wheeling there... Thought I might have bent a spindle, tie rod, or maybe even caused my rack to jump a tooth. I was worried.

Like your situation, the rig still tracked straight on the 6 hour drive home. And the tires didn't overheated or wear excessively.
Got home, got an alignment, problem solved.

Still not sure what caused everything to jump so far out. I've come to realize that wheeling the hard trails means I'll need an alignment when I get back to town.

These rigs have a pretty weak front end imo. But that can be mitigated if you get more serious about wheeling.
I now have Total Chaos spindle gussets and cam tab gussets. I'll be installing Apex Chassis tie rod assemblies soon as well.

 

Thanks for the replies. Going to get an alignment this morning. Just want to know what caused it. Hope the shop will answer the question.

 

I would save myself the trouble and just go to an alignment shop, should be an easy and inexpensive fix

 

Got the alignment done. Shop said they couldn't tell what moved. Not much difference between the before & after specs. Oh well.....

 

Did they center the steering wheel for you?

 

Yes they did.

 

Steering wheel don't just go off center, usually it's a hard bump or pot hole that moved your control arms or rubber bushing that cracked. Since your 4R is a 2007, I wouldn't just write it off with a simple adjustment.
