2007 V8 4Runner

Level kit

My son was driving his 4Runner around 35-40 mph Saturday when it suddenly started making a grinding type noise and stopped moving. You can move the shift lever through the gears ok and the shaft is spinning but making a terrible noise. Won't move in 4wd either. I haven't been able to get under the vehicle to check it out. Has anyone experienced something like this before? It has 250k on it and I'm afraid it will cost more to fix than its worth. Any insight will be appreciated.
