Yeah, it has on off road, utilitarian look that reminds me of the FJ. Anyone using a Pro in an urban environment like I need to do, occasionally, would be advised to make sure it can get under the parking garage barriers where they will be parking. I drove a lifted Tacoma with a roof rack before getting my 4 Runner, it was touch and go sometimes in Toronto. mrwyoming measured 79.5 inches, and that is roughly what I determined it to be with my dealer just before I decided to get an ORP. I know for a fact that with that height a Pro won’t go into the downtown parking garages I need to use to attend hockey, soccer, and other big events in downtown Toronto. So, maybe next time, Pro! Cool vehicle otherwise. Even though the roof rack isn’t my favourite design, I could have lived with it if it was practical.

I had a 2008 FJ many years ago and remember the rack well enough. I meant, the cross bars used on the new pro rack are more than likely, the same part numbers as were the ones on the FJ. Shit, looking at the racks, they probably took the left over FJ racks, bent the tube down to connect to the 4R mounting holes and called it a day.

I have looked everywhere for the new rack and today I received an email from a Toyota dealer saying that Toyota issued a stop sale on the rack and it's currently unavailable. Has anyone found where they can be purchased?

Too funny. Just keep an eye on kijiji or Craig’s list. Once the guys that have them have to walk 1/2 mile in the rain or snow from a surface parking lot instead of using the garage they will be for sale. Haha.

Suit yourself chief. Say, do they have counting where you're from? Get ready for subtraction, it's a doozy.

I'm laughing super hard if you're imagining a bunch of Japanese dudes pawing through a warehouse, cutting up and bending NOS parts, and reapplying powdercoat. That process would be way more expensive and less repeatable than simply designing and manufacturing a part correctly from scratch.

The daydream was already wrong when you posited that Toyota is in the business of just having stacks of parts laying around (especially years after the fact). That was purely a post-war American way of manufacturing- extremely wasteful and used up tons of floor space in inventory storage. Do yourself a favor and read The Toyota Way- it's the very foundation of modern lean manufacturing and what all automotive companies embody today.

o I see the difference now wow. it's the same thing but different. enough to make 2-3 adjustments on the already available programming and materials. thanks for taking the time to cut and paste images and correcting the dummys on here. now I can sleep and concentrate on subtracting....super difficult. what's 1--1

Wow, why does Toyota even have design engineers when they can just hire this dude?

GUYS I FIGURED IT OUT. JUST MAKE 2-3 ADJUSTMENTS ON THE PROGRAMMING AND MATERIALS. WELP, I'M GOING TO LUNCH

I much prefer an aftermarket rack.

I think we can all agree that Gobi is out of the question unless you like waiting an eternity

I'm with ya on this. An it doesn't matter how they came up with the rack, it's dam ugly! I recommend the SSO rack. Better than Gobi, IMO, no drill, and readily available.

Part number is pt278-89190. It is listed as not available for dealer sale yet. I talked to Toyota shop on Friday. They can't even tell me the price.

20181202_105342.jpg I just bought one thru dealer and they only allow purchase to a TRD PRO owner - they need your vin # to sell it to you. I like the look of it after looking into other options for after market roof racks. Part #PT278-89190.

Have any of you considered putting a fairing on the front of this rack for wind noise reduction? I think when I get it back from PPF/Coating tomorrow I am going to measure it up and adjust some of the cross bars and see if I can get one to work. I put my surfboards inside ( love the rear window sliding down, one of the main reasons I bought this) so the roof rack will be used sparingly if at all. I did consider removing it and just putting rails on but not sure about that either.

    Thanks for any insight.

I love it on my FJ and I now love it on my 4Runner. And yes it looks great on a cement. I do wish it went a little further to the front of the vehicle but the sunroof is there. Oh well. Its not much higher than the stock 4Runner roof rack. More bars and 2 levels makes it amazing for me. I attached a few before and after pics for you guys. When my FJ in cement and 4Runner in cement are sitting in my driveway with the same style roof racks it looks amazing. I'm sure people won't like it, then don't look and don't do it to yours. Bottom line!
