Hey guys! I have a 13 Sr5 4Runner & I’ve just recently noticed while idiling I hear a VERY slight Ticking/tapping/Knocking sound. If the vehicle is in neutral it doesn’t make the sound but if it’s in gear while stopped or while I’m parked it makes the noise!! I’ve changed the Oil,Put better fuel in it. Any suggestions or solutions??

Just an FYI-- Every 4.0 I've owned (Tacoma's) + a family member's 4runner sound like they've got a flywheel sounding engine tick. I assume it to be normal. Not sure if yours is the same tick.

Not too sure! I can hear it when I’m parked my garage, and I can hear it while I’m idiling but it’s Very faint! It’s just driving me insane lol

I believe it's normal. My '10 did it and ran sweet and smooth until I traded it at 117k. They aren't the quietest idling engines.

Really?? This is my first 4Runner & I’m used to driving GM and I never experienced this issue! I understand it’s a different vehicle and motor but this tapping noise is driving me nuts LOL! Was there anything you did to quiet it down?

I didn't worry about it once I realized it wasnt hurting anything. If you want to post a sound clip we would have a better idea but none of the 4runners I've heard have idled that quietly.

It's normal for the 4.0. My 2011 FJ made the same noise at idle.

These engines are not quiet for sure. Ive experienced the same on my 2011. More like a chirping squeaking sound...but Ive listened to other 4runners and they are the same. Im learning to live with it.

Yep an audio or video clip would be good to give us a better idea of what's going on (normal vs abnormal).

I own an 18 TR4 and a 14 Taco and Drive a 14 & 08 Taco at work. All with the same 4.0L Engines.. They all have FAINT ticking sounds. Sounds a bit like valve train. All sound similar..

I read somewhere on the Taco Forums, it is not internal to the engine but rather an emissions device located up near the intake manifold. The 08 I drive at work has really high miles and it's quite loud. I idle that truck all day long in the winter so the engine has a lot of hours on it working on highway projects. I bought that truck new and I am familiar with the noise so I don't let it bother me... It sometimes ticks loud and sometimes not so much. That said, I dunno what it is and don't care. Never been a problem for me..

I hear it in my new 18 T4r and just thought "guess it hasn't been addressed by the Engineers..." Oh well..

Note, a buddy of mine had a LOUD tick in his 98 Taco and it turned out to be a cracked/weak lifter.. Toyota fixed under extended warranty. Also, a neighbor had a Honda with a LOUD tick and it was the tip of a spark plug broken off inside the engine.

Ask a friend to listen to theirs or keep your ears open at the mall parking lots...

In conclusion, If it is really a faint noise I wouldn't worry about it. I personally heard both of those problem engines and the tick was very distinct and definitely not something you would ignore.. So, if you're really concerned I would get a professional opinion from the dealer...Hope this helps.

PS: I run the cheapest gas I can find in all of them and never a problem.. LOVE TOYOTAS.......
