Can I get a count on how many of you guys have snapped a stud using the recommended 85 ft lbs of torque? Well im one of em and another was stretched a whole millimeter so it was just an accident waiting to happen. I’ve heard of several cases of front wheel studs being broken without using excessive torque on 5th gens. So, having ocd and all, I couldn’t have any peace of mind knowing the others might give at any moment on the highway and all hell breaks loose lol. Today I burnt about 5000 calories replacing all 12 front wheel studs and now im content:)

Snapped one last night on the driver’s rear wheel. I just got done replacing it now.

I honestly think there should be a recall. The ones we’re breaking are part of a bad batch. Normal, good studs can withstand 150+ lbs of torque. Surprisingly, there’s not multiple cases of wheels coming off on hard turns. I would recommend changing all the fronts or atleast 3 out of 6 on each hub. Studs are cheap. Especially the dorman autozone brand which are only 2 bones a piece

I do not have others mess with my 4runner .. so I do the tire rotations. when I put the odd ball lug nuts on the stud thread was too soft and had a sliver of metal come off the stud.

on my GM vehicles still have them 1996 and the 2000 never had that ever happen .. so I do believe the metal Toyota used is not all that strong.

I torque my wheels every 6 months . 80ft lbs and so far they did not loosen .. if I did feel the nuts loosen I would most likely replace the studs.

these must not have idiots use air guns or the studs will get damaged either on or off..

yesterday I was at a tire shop and a customer had his stud break off.. was looking for wheels on a Dodge.

since this is a 5000lbs suv truck the studs should handle 120ft lbs of torque.. if we do that amount IMO the studs will pop off quickly..

Can’t say the dorman brand are in fact strongest but im confident they’re stronger than the ones from the factory that so many people have broken

today I put on the lug nut locks. and because of your issues with this stud breaking I looked at the stud when I removed the lug nut and I was seeing just a small amount of stud showing . so short studs and that would create less friction on the torquing of the nuts .. more thread will create more friction on the nut.
I purchased some dorman studs for my exhaust manifold on my GM 5.3L engine . stud popped off well those studs were not as big in diameter than the GM studs .. thread same but the dia was smaller .. used a die on those threads was very sloppy ..

check the dorman stud with a measuring tool

I know some say they like Dorman... but does anyone know what the highest quality studs are that we can get for a 4runner?

I purchased the toyota locks on Amazon .. genuine toyota parts .. cheaper than going to dealership ..
