I changed some lights, tires and tinted windows...mind blowing huh
a lot of parts shops will scan for free. There is the ultraguage that can read codes as well and the scanguage II and both of these can be mounted in the cab.

I had the ultraguage in my Tacoma and other guys had the scanguage, they just plug into the ODBII plug under the dash. There are others that have a plug that goes in the ODBII port and connects to your phone and tablet, but I don't know what they can read and if they can reset codes, I would assume they could but I'm unsure.

I had it mounted here in the Tacoma, other guys had it up by the rearview mirror, if I had to do it again I would probably put it up there:

the Tacoma was a 2008 but since they are all ODBII (I think all cars since like 1996 or something are standardized to this) you should be fine

Is this something you want in your vehicle all the time or just to run diagnostics? How detailed are you wanting the information? Ultra Guage and Scanguage are meant to be mounted and connected to the vehicle in a more permanent manner but are interchangeable between vehicles.

I had a Cobb Tuning Access Port in my Subaru and that thing would pull all kinds of diagnostic information for you...unfortunately, not available for Toyota 4Runner’s or Tacoma’s.

The Carista bluetooth obdii reader (Amazon) gets good reviews and is used by a lot of Tacoma guys. You download a phone app to read codes AND you can make settings changes (door locks, seatbelt chimes, etc).

To change settings, you need a paid subscription, but it's free for 7 days. I'd assume you can read codes after that, but just couldn't make settings changes.
