So...Along with the new '18 Runner I just got a card in the mail for the free oil changes for 3 years. What they cover is 10,000 miles or a year with synthetic. Problem is I do not go that long in between changes even with synthetic which I've ran for years in vehicles I like keeping it at 6,000 just my own piece of mind I guess. I'm not waiting 10,000 / year on this vehicle either. How long do you folks go on your changes?

My 14 Corolla Premium S has been changed every ten thousand miles. 0-20 syn every time. For free.
110,000 miles. Runs like brand new it’s the bearing tolerances.

Did my first oil change at 5500 miles. Did the 2nd one at 13,000 miles...also did the front and rear diff oil at that time as well. Will probably do the next oil change at 20,000 miles.

I don't really have a schedule that I follow, but I'll never go over 10,000 miles between changes.

Thirdyota - You've already done differential fluid at 13,000? Wow that's super early for that. Did the dealer do it for you? I know they don't mind the money but they should of mentioned that you were performing that very early.

I did all of the work myself.

Early indeed, but if I remember correctly, the owners manual says to inspect at 15,000.

If I'm gonna bother inspecting the oil, I'm just gonna go ahead and change it. It's quite easy to do.

Just note at least on the Mobil1 Extended Use Synthetic oil there's a note on it to "follow dealer recommendations" for "severe usage." Another words probably a good idea to change more often for dusty conditions, lots of towing, continuous idling, etc. etc...I'm just not comfortable with a yearly change perhaps I just sleep better at night doing it a bit more often I don't know.

hi, looking to change the rear diff fluid. I have a 2018 with 6k miles. It can't hurt to drain and fill it with new fluid for a little piece of mind, IMO. When I went to the dealership for my first free service, they claimed they didn't have the fluid in stock, which I found rather odd. Anyway, I'm scheduling my second free service and they now said they have it in stock. I asked which kind of diff gear oil, and they said exxon 80/90. I just want to make sure this is the correct/proper gear oil after all the horror stories I've heard about regarding service dept's at dealerships. Is exxon 80/90 the correct gear oil or is there anything better that I can upgrade to? thanks

If your changing yourself there's probably better out there (Amsoil??) but where your driving a 2018 I'd be careful of any potential warranty issues.

When I had Toyota Care I did it every 5000 miles. I tow a lot and am not easy on this vehicle. I had to pay for every other oil change because Toyota care only covers oil changes every 10,000 miles. Now I am doing them myself. I switched to Amsoil OE and I will be changing the oil every 7500 miles.

I made sure I bought the filter at the dealer so there is a record of it. There should be no issue warranty wise with doing your own oil change. Just keep records

Put the correct viscosity in and follow manufacturer's guidelines. Brand doesn't matter get what's on sale.

With the advanced oils today you might be able to go forever w/o a change who knows. If you think about the marketing aspect of toyota care its appealing to X% of the buyers. But they are a for profit business they save millions annually not provding the 5,000 & 15,000 mile oil change with toyota care - realizing that X% of buyers will not only want a 5 & 15 oil change they will get them done at the dealership providing more revenue. Its really up to you and you comfort level. - oil is cheap in comparison to any repair ; purchase the correct tools and do it yourself its almost fun and gets you under the vehicle where you may notice other issues.

I’m old fashioned and change it every 5-5.5k miles.

Mine is a 2017 and has 32k miles on it already with 3x cross country trips on it and a trip from VA to Alabama Gulf Shores.

    I prefer driving over flying

My free oil changes were for 10k, but I asked my service writer to do them at 5k since that is my normal schedule. He was fine with it. Some folks have said that their dealer wont do them until 10k for the free ones.

Dealer here is 2 years free. Once a year or 10K which ever is first.

I will never sniff 10K a year let a lone 5k so I will just do it every year.

I had to pay for mine every other oil change because of the 10K free changes. I wanted it done every 5K. Now that TC is over with I will do it myself every 7500K with Amsoil.

Brand of oil doesn't matter. I get whats on sale. Just choose the proper viscosity and change interval per manufacturer's specs. I will run Walmart's brand of oil with zero worries. When is the last time you heard of engine failure because of using the wrong brand of oil? Never happens.

Ahh the old and never ending oil debate is forming. :D Anyway, to an OCD dude like me it matters. The 4 does require full synthetic and I likes me the Amsoil or the stock Toyota full synthetic. Won't use anything else. :notsure:

Toyota oils are just another repackaged brand. Maybe a Mobil1 or Penzoil I don't know. I doubt they have their own facility producing oil.
