Welcome! The amount of people that ditch Taco's to move into 4Runners never ceases to amaze me!

After owning two 2nd gen Taco's myself, it really is amazing how much of a better built vehicle the 4Runner is.

I had a 2007 Taco Sport LB. That one was solid. 2nd gen builds probably went on the cheaper side in later years as some of the comments suggest.

But yeah, the 3rd gen Taco really falls short in build quality and performance when compared to the 4R.

Why wouldn’t they just build the Taco in Japan?...and why wouldn’t they give the Taco the same tech they give the 6speed AT transmission of the Lexus? maybe all of these new trannys hunt though. I don’t know. I’m happy with my 5 speed even if it’s not the most efficient. At least my truck takes 87.

Congrats on the purchase. Lots of us converts here.

Meh, Scott has been on TW for a long while and fucked up and bought a subie granola wagon and realized his error and bought the 4R.

    The same 4Runner everyone has
Biggest reason is that imported light trucks are still subject to the chicken tax, a 25% tariff imposed during the Johnson administration to insulate domestic manufacturers from foreign competition. Look it up, it's a pretty interesting story and also still the reason why badass/cool/compact foreign trucks can't make a business case here. That's why Nissan and Toyota have truck plants here in the US.

Also, I believe the demand for the Tacoma currently outstrips the 4Runner by 2 or 3 times in terms of sales, which they make up with extra shifts here in the US. By comparison the 4Runner is practically a boutique or coachbuilt vehicle (except it's not- the Tahara plant is one of the most automated assembly lines in the world, with the least amount of defects). More homework for you: the Toyota Way, discusses how Toyota changed the entire manufacturing industry to improve quality/efficiency and cut waste.

That’s cool history on the chicken tax from 1964, and how Ford, one of the companies the law was supposed to protect, actually circumvented it.

:anonymous: the truth is out

    He right!
Long story short- totaled Tacoma, got talked into buying a Subi for safety and within 24 hours I was over it. Three days later I traded in and it cost me about a grand a day for that mistake :frustrated:

I’ll try to be good here and not let my wrath follow me from tw hahahha
