All terrain tire recommendations?

I seem to have the same requirements you do and wanted to know if you have made a choice and if you are happy about it. I appreciate any updates. An important thing for me is if the tires are quite in highway driving.

I'm hoping to put some Michelin LTX MS2's or Defenders on my '15 Limited, but I'm getting the feedback that I cannot put a larger tire on w/o a lift of any kind. Any experience or knowledge from anyone would be appreciated

 

As stated in this thread earlier, go with a 17” wheel like the TRD Wheels or after market. It is a lot easier to get tire sizes for a 17” than a 20”. Only company to make a decent off road tire for the limited is Toyo.

 

I have Michelin Defender's LT 285/70/17 MS...I am thinking about swapping them out for AT's, but my main concern is are the MS tires gonna be ok for driving on the beach (with obvious air down)? Should I leave them be and not bother with AT's for the time being? The beach will be the only off roading i am planning for the very near future. TIA.

 

Thank you all for all the help. After going through all the advice and the research I ended up with TRD 17" Wheels, and Goodyear Wrangler AT tires with Kevlar. The truck looks pretty cool, and I must say driving on the freeway is as smooth and quite as the original tires, after a couple of weeks of driving. Here's what the car looks like.

 

Does anyone have reviews of the Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S yet? I'm reading some good stuff about them but thought maybe someone here has been running them.

 

What did you pay per tire?

 

I ran Cooper Discoverer RTX’s for a year they are great!!

 

I have looked at those and really like the look, etc., but because of past experience with Good Year as a company concerning some RV tires, I wouldn't put a Good Year tire on a wheel burrow.

Michelin AT's are excellent for those that want an AT tire but drive on the road most of the time. If you want a smooth and quiet AT, this is a very safe bet.

 

off topic maybe but have you looked at the GY Endurance tires?
I just upgraded from a load range C to a LR-D using GY Endurance tires.
After a 200 mile tow, it was a first time on I-10 that the sway and concrete ripples did not leave me in a state of white knuckles. Well also the upgraded truck to a 6.2L F250.

I went to tire rack to read the reviews and look at the review category feedback. I'm also looking between GY and Cooper tires.
Did discover that many of these tires have very similar model numbers but have different load range and speed ratings.
Just to add to the challenge of selecting tires. Could it be this additional confusion is why so many have good/bad experiences with a given tire?

I say in jest yet when I bought GY-Endurance for the Travel Trailer and then within a few days read about Carlisle tires......oh well...lol....

I'm still shopping as well. CFO will tell me not to overthink this and I hate it when she's right but.....still gottah mull it over some more....lol...

 

I think a lot of people are hesitant to review based on the fact that they just came out and no one has been through a winter with them yet...thats at least what i picked up from a couple reviews. They look like great tires and are a great price. I dont do alot of off roading, but will be going on the sand for surf fishing (dont know if my current tires would be ok with that, even with airing down), and im concerned about the winter time as well...although the michelin multi seasons i have on now are really good tires. BUT i want to make the switch overall...i hear you on the CFO aspect! haha! my birthday is this month so between deciding on new AT's and hopefully being able to sell my MS's relatively quickly, I think it will be ok haha.

 

and YES, all the size options are endlessly confusing!

 

Our local NAPA dealer also has a shop. As I've been building a rapport with them for tractor service; went to the shop supervisor and asked him for a price on Cooper AT3's. Discount has them for 160, his quote was 133.....I smiled and said sold! So tomorrow new shoes, wife is happy about the bargain.

Discount Tire had them for 160...our local NAPA dealer had them for 133 each, plus free rotation every 6k...which coincided with my oil changes.
I bring in the Amsoil and for 15 bucks they change it, lube U-joints and get good local gossip conversations.....all in all much like hanging out at Cheers w/o the beer....lol....

Do you get any steering wheel vibes with the good year kevlars at highway speeds (75mph)?

Reason I ask- I get steering wheel vibes in my '18 Tacoma with the good years. Just wondering if it's the tires or the truck.

No, I haven't made my final decision yet. If i keep the 20" wheels I am putting 275/55/20 BFGs. The decision is whether or not to do what was suggested and get the 17" TRD Pro wheel.

 

The classic a/t tire for any Toyota has to be the BFG. Old school - mounted with the white letters out, modern - blackwall out. I used them on my first Hiluxes, from 1980. Having said that, I’ve also used Duratracs, so I’m not a brand loyalist. Everyone has different needs and conditions to cope with that affects their choice. In our area of rural, central Ontario here in Canada, along with short forays into the northern wilderness, it helps to have a big coarse tread that sheds mud when you’re off road. We get a lot of snow, and so I consider these tires as summer tires only, even though you guys down south probably rate them for winter. Most drivers up here, myself included, have winter tires mounted on steelies with a true winter tire rated for cold weather. On my 4 Runner, I’m using Bridgestone Blizzaks, but there are other great brands as well including Michelin. I’ll probably install the winter tires at the end of November, and leave them on until the end of March. That’s winter in Canada! Lots of icy, cold, snowy conditions, and salt and sand that make you cringe if you’re driving a new vehicle - haha. But after the first coating of salt brine, when it’s white from front to back, you get used to it.

 

What did you think of the Duratracs? I had them on my FJ and got decent wear. They weren't the most comfortable tire and were painful to balance, but they got me anywhere I needed to go.
