80% Off Road Rear Bumper Bash Bar

I could be wrong here. But going from the photos it looks like that kit hangs pretty low and will decrease your departure angle. I’d stick with the 80% OR version to maintain maximum clearance

Is there a company similar to this that you don't need to do a bumper chop? One that does a wrap around protecting the existing bumper?

 

...Are you sure you linked the right product? The one you linked does hang much lower.
It's mounted below the hatch instead of the integrated into the bumper to the right of the hatch.

Nothing wrong with that as I'm sure as a tire swingout it will work fine. But it's much more likely to hangup on obstacles.

I've seen a few guys ruin their Rigd swingout... Which the product you linked looks to be basically a DIY version of.

Not that I know of. There are some custom fabs out there but anything that hangs below your bumper will further decrease clearance.

 

Most hitch mounted swingouts are not very low profile and hurt your departure angle. If you're planning to actually wheel I'd avoid them.


I've seen a couple people bend these up pretty bad on the trail. Even online you can find similar scenarios.
Here's one from TFLOffRoad's channel:


The arm of the swingout caught a tree root and stopped the vehicle. It not only caused the vehicle to get stuck, but it did significant damage to the swingout as well.

No, no, no, no. Imagine 80%'s kit. Now make it out of the one I linked. That is what I am doing, I just didn't want to source the metal and not have to cut as much as possible. We need less people buying overpriced products and more bespoke ideas. I will have an entire rear bumper setup for less than $1k when I am done, as opposed to the insane prices they normally go for

 

Ah. Are you going to be buying DOM tubing as well? And do you have a tube bender that will work for it? The kit you have is for a swing out only. Are you hoping there’s enough material there to build a full rear bumper out of?

I don’t think the 80% kit is overpriced to be fair. Kind of a bargain deal when most of these setups are upwards of $1800 and weigh hundreds of pounds. Most also require cutting your rear crossmember out entirely.

Not trying to be argumentative here. But if you’re going to be designing, measuring, cutting and welding in the kit why not just buy the raw materials you need and build. I don’t see that kit helping you much for the bumper.

Personally, I don’t have a tube bender or tube notcher. But I do have a welder. So the 80% kit is ideal for a guy like me. I’m okay with paying to use someone else’s design, R and D, and specialized equipment that I will likely never need again and don’t have space to store. So I would not agree that the 80% kit is a “overpriced product.”

But hey, I love being wrong. It means I have an opportunity to learn. So build your own and post it up. I’d love to see the finished product.

And Ratha clearly states you need to buy the bigger pieces. It was to save the end user's shipping cost. He's a certified real one. Instead of just taking a screenshot, at least put the effort in to understand the product. He even sells the 3d models so one could mock up the design (*hint). Imagine if I had the 80% models. I could almost slap them together (*foreshadowing). Forgive me for not explaining every detail, but I don't expect this to be very difficult.

And DOM is completely unnecessary in this application. Use HREW, CREW or just regular square tubing if you are concerned about not being able to bend a tube. Or you know, go to a machine shop. The obsession with DOM is unwarranted.

So I reached out to 80% Off road and told them I plan on using the "limited" trim rear bumper. They told me they make a version of the kit specifically for that bumper as it's a little wider. Then they sent over this photo.



Now I'm excited! This looks fantastic!
I'm planning to keep the stock hitch underneath the bash bar. Other than that detail this is the end goal of how it should look.

I was originally thinking this would be a slight compromise of looks traded for additional clearance and armor. But honestly, this looks great!

 

That looks like a real clean install.

 

Got my limited bumper from Ebay but it took a little damage during shipping. Lame! I am getting it repainted by a local shop for $350. Having him spray the chrome section flat black as well.

The kit from 80% should get here in 6 weeks or so. I'll update this thread when I get it in.

You know.. at first I was annoyed by OP because this is not in fact 80 percent off as some deal were getting... but now I'm ticked off at the company because it's literally in their name!!

My feeble little smooth brain is a sucker when I see any inclination of a number and a percent off...

 

I really like the look of this thing. Not adding hundreds of lb is a bonus.

This was posted in another thread, but is more appropriate in this one. Here's my 80% Off Road bash bar with side hoops (plus high clearance hitch relocation) and tire carrier install from last month. Since 80% is local to me, I had Nick do the full weld up and install. Came out great and my rear departure angle/clearance is drastically improved.

 

What was the total price OTD?

I noticed you have the ICS Fab third brake light housing. I'm about to install mine, hopefully this weekend. How do you like it?

 

I like that a lot, also interested in cost out the door as i am local.

 

Not going to lie, after seeing this I'm pretty convinced this will be what I do to the rear end eventually. I will find an SR5 rear bumper first though so I won't have the valence holes.

 

Why buy a whole new bumper cap? I covered it with a $15 roll of 3M auto trim strip all the way across. Nick @80% laughed when he saw it again a few days later. Thought it was factory.

 

I am seriously now considering this, and I wasn’t even looking to replace my rear bumper (yet). That looks great.

 

Nick @ 80% hooked me up, so I don’t want to quote anyone a price that’s not accurate. Reach out to him via the messaging app on their website and have him give you a quote. Suffice to say it was far less for a complete setup (bumper + carrier) fully installed than any other options I considered - and I really looked around. I can’t recommend Nick and John enough. They’re a 2-man shop, but they really know their shit and build quality, bulletproof stuff. Great guys, too. Buy and support local if you can.

On the ICS brake 3rd brake light, I like it. Only complaint is the crappy paint on the faceplate (it scratches just looking at it), but mine was one of the very first batch and they have since changed the coating. Took a while to wire up and into my switch panel up front, but works well. Mine has a BD S2 Pro Amber for a chase light and a S2 Pro White Work/Scene light. Great for camping and nighttime tailgaters. LOL

Edit: I liked your so much I decided to chop up a limited bumper. The lines of the limited bumper go well with this kit.

Also I knew if I messed up too terribly I could just chop the bars off the frame, grind flat, paint black and put the regular bumper back on
