    Reliability isn't guite there anymore. I would trust F-150 EcoBoost more than Toyota's, Ford has been making them for over a decade.

    I will have to buy Extended Warranty first time in my life I guess. Any vehicle out there that is as good as the GX550? Bronco is in a different class and can't tow much.

    Shit dude honestly I’d just stick with the GX. Didnt you already put some money down on it?

    Even if a small percentage of engines are having some problems early on that doesn’t mean yours will fail. Buy the extended warranty. Have some fun with it. I’m sure you’ll like it

    4th gen was ugly. BUT! It had a V8 option. I owned and miss my 05 V8 4runner. It was a quick SUV. Kept up or beat a lot of cars/trucks when it came to off the line acceleration. I know these aren't race cars, but I like power, the V8 4runner has it.

    6th Gen should have had the 5.7 v8… Damned EPA ruining a good thing.

    I absolutely hate any extra costs on a new vehicle. I highly dislike extended warranties. With that said if I were buying a new Toyota/Lexus SUV now I would definitely get one.

    Use it as a negotiation tactic. Definitely pretend like you don't want it. But ask them to lower price of vehicle or Interest % if you buy a warranty. It's a grey area on legality, but trust me, they will work a deal.

    I disagree. I actually thought the 4th gen looked good. The early 5th gen was probably the least appealing to me.

    If you liked the power of the 2UZ, you'll probably like the 6th gen.

    I have owned and still own a 2UZ. GX470, V8 4runner, current is a 2001 LX470.

    The v8 4runner was the fastest. Due to weight and I think the 05 I had was just a lucky one, that got more power than others.

    I only said 4th gen was ugly to appeal to the masses. I actually liked the truck in all aspects.

    I still miss my '03 sometimes. Torque all day. The 1GR is pretty nice for a V6, but I think the granny gears make it feel wimpy at times.

    I currently have a 2nd Gen Tacoma TRD Sport AC (2WD) that I am very happy with. Drive it like I stole it. Between that and my 2019 T4R I would keep what I have and wait.

    It almost seems like, in my opinion, the manufacturers are not ready, or didn't anticipate the last CAFE tightening of standards - and the powertrains are not ready for prime time yet. The issues with the Tundra, and now the GX550, and who knows what is next. These vehicle prices are too high for me to gamble and take a chance and still be comfortable.

    Not at all.i just suspect that either it’s a rare failure that if it happens will happen early and warranty will cover with a free loaner etc. OR if common enough there will be a recall fix soon. Toyota isn’t stupid.

    And I have not read anywhere that these engines are seizing and stranding guys on the side of the road. They get noisy and you take it in.


    Re my trade comment - you would be shocked what you can get away with. My wife’s 08 Pilot developed a loud tick at 9 years old. 2 attempts adjusting the valves didn’t cure it and both my indie and dealer suspected bearings. So we traded it to the same dealer that had looked at in service and sales didn’t even notice. They barely even look at them, just goes straight on a flatbed to the auto auction…

    The first Supra Turbo came out in like 1987 IIRC. This isn’t Toyotas first rodeo…

    When he says smooth he’s probably not talking valve noise, he’s talking vibrations.

    Inline 6 is one of the only common auto engine layouts that has perfect primary and secondary fundamental balance.. v8s can get close with cross plane cranks, counterweights and harmonic balancers but not perfect. Everything else has some level of undamped vibes no matter what you do .

    A lot of the Tundras are failing on the highway and need to be towed.

    There’s a big difference in trading in a 10 year old vehicle that’s going to auction and a few year old truck that costs $60K+. I’m sure the dealer will be happy to give you a few grand in trade for a tundra with a blown engine but you won’t be too happy since you still owe $30K on it.

    5th gen post-facelift with Pro grilles or customized grilles I think take the cake for nicest aesthetic since 1st 2nd & 3rd gen.

    I didn’t realize they are being flatbed. If they are I stand corrected.

    Re: the trade. Since the power train warranty runs 6 years if somebody trades a blown engine out of warranty by definition it’s at least a 7 year old car. If said person still owes $30k at that point - frankly they need help from Dave Ramsey, not Toyota.

    51 people self reporting since 2022, on a vehicle that sells 100,000 units per year. Thats a textbook definition of anecdotal.

    Find another vehicle with reputation for being “reliable”. Is there a similar concentration of anecdotal reports of new engines blowing up? Nope.
