When I switch to 4H, the 4H and center lock lights blink. In that position, if I push the center lock button, nothing seems to change. When I stop and switch to 4L, I get a beeping, and the same lights blink. I am new to switching between 4wd and 2wd, so can someone please tell me how this should be working?

If the lights are blinking it has not engaged, they will be solid when it has engaged. It would help if you stated what year your Runner is.

Keep trying, if it does not get much use it can take several times to finally get it. Move forward just a little, and try it again, neutral with your foot on the brake, hope it works for you.

hey, good news! I watched a couple youtube vids where guys banged on the transfer case motor with a rubber mallet a few times to jar it lose. I tried it and still nothing, then I went whole hog and tapped it good with a ball peen and after a few tries it finally engaged. That was easy, thank you Toyota.

THIS raises the question as to what causes this transfer case to stick from non use? What kind of lube is used? Liquid Gorilla Glue?!?

This is a good reminder to frequently engage 4 wheel drive to keep the actuator lubed. If I'm not doing much 4wheeling I will engage and disengage my transfer case once a month.

last see that 4x4 lever in my car to the left, LOL.
