Pcv valve

Hello forum members, i drive a 2010 4 runner and i have a lot of smoke after the car is been standing for a while. I replaced the pcv valve a few months ago and now i clean it often because it gets clogged with oil. I ordered a catch can and will install it soon. Who on this forum is familiar with this problem and can tell me what the problem could be. The 4runner has driven138.000 km

 

Is it smoke or condensation?

Oil burning would product blue smoke and you would see a loss in oil level. I would do compression and leakdown testing if it is smoke.

 

Compression and leak down tests will give you your answer. Bad rings/piston(s), scored cylinder wall? Have you pulled any of the spark plugs? What do they look like? Definitely shouldn't be happening on the 1GR-FE. Especially one with that few kilometers. What's the maintenance history?

 

It's grey smoke and as far as i can see and smell it's burned oil. It's for 20 or 30 seconds. About 5 or 6000 kilometers ago i went to the garage to do a big service, oil filter, spark plugs. Because the car kept smoking i did it myself a month ago. I added flush and took the oilfilter out which was completely clogged, i've never seen a filter that clogged in my life so u guess the garage didn't change it. I also refreshed the oil and i did the same proces a week ago. It doesn't go any better. I didn't went to the garage yet for a compressiontest.

 

And the coolant level is always the same level.

 

Let us know what you find after a compression test. What was the oil filter clogged with? Black, chunky, oil-like globs? Metal shavings?

 

The filter was clogged with dry and hardened oilremains. No metal shavings. I'll try to post some pictures of the oilfilter tomorrow. It's really amazing and i don't believe the garage changed the oilfilter.

 

Doesn't sound like it. It's too bad. I really hope you can save this engine. It sounds like it's been abused and not well cared for. How long have you had it?

 

Something sounds really off if the oil filter has crusty oil on it.

 

You're in Curacao, right? Did you buy the 4Runner used? Sounds like severe oil sludging. The engine may be beyond economical repair.

 

Yes i live in Curacao and u bought it used. We have very bad petrol here on the island and the average speed here is about 50 or 60 kilometers an hour. I think that's a problem too.

 

^Bad gasoline can cause clogged fuel filters and engine knock/pinging, but doesn't degrade the oil like this. The previous owners have been negligent and didn't change the oil, simple as that. Normal oil change intervals are every 8000 km with conventional oil or every 16,000 km with synethetic. If you're seeing dry and hardened oil remains in the filter cap, the previous owner probably didn't change the oil for 40,000 km or more. If you remove the valve covers, you'll probably find a sea of black goop.

 

Yes i know but i brought it to the garage here for service and because i didn't trust it i did it myself for about 5000 kilometers later and i foundation the oilfilter that clogged. He told me the engine was a little dirty and had to do service 6 months later. Well i guess i paid a lot for very little service.

I cut it in 3 pieces to see the inside. It's as bad as the outside.

 

That filter wasn't new 5000km ago, it looks like it has never been changed ever to me!!!

I guessing the oil was bypassing the filter, there's no way the oil could past through that filter!!!

 

Damn! I bet the crude oil coming out of the Venezuelan oil rigs 300 kms from you look cleaner than that!

The engine (and filter) was toast well before the garage serviced it 5000 km ago. It was a lot more severe than "a little dirty".

 

There's nothing wet there. If it was just that the filter was bypassing there would still be some wet oil on one side of the filter or the other.

Are your oil passages plugged up? Is your oil pump working? Do you have any warning lights lit up and if not, did you verify the warning lights at least function at start up?

 

Assuming no issue with your heads or head gasket you may have more serious issues than you realize. If your oil is dirty and the vehicle has been maintenance neglected it's whole life, your oil control rings are likely gummed up, unable to move due to caked on carbon/oil behind them, scraping the hell out of your cylinder walls.

This would be a possible explanation for the smoke. If this is the case that means your block is toast. The cylinders on this engine cannot be bored. I hope for your sake this is not the case, but based on what's in that filter it's not looking good.

Before you start spending a lot of money to resolve this, I suggest you find a mechanic that can bore scope your cylinders to determine if your block is even still good.

 

I've never seen anything that bad in almost 50 years of driving and more than 50 years of working on vehicles.

 

Well i paid for the whole service package. And for sure they didn't change the oilfilter. I repaired a lot myself in the past but due to lack of time i went to the garage. Here on Curacao we have a lot of garages who learned their job underneath a tree. I will go to find another garage but i'm here on this forum trying to find out what possibly could be wrong before they tell me another fairytail.

With a filter that plugged up you can bet the motor is looking the same. I would pull the valve covers and oil pan and clean it out the lifter valley it's probably just as bad as the filter was use a shop vac and suck out as much crap as you can from the lifter area and get the big chunks out. Then flush it with some diesel fuel and let it run out the bottom. when you think you have it cleaned out put it all back together and refill and let it run for a bit keeping an eye on the oil pressure then change out the filter and cut it open to see how much crap came out if its plugged drop the pan and make sure the oil pick up isn't getting plugged up. when you get the big stuff out you can refill with oil jus substitute a quart of transmission oil for one quart of regular oil and run aging changing the filter a couple of times and check it. you may have to do this a couple of times, but the trans oil will clean it out good. This may take a few oil changes to get it cleaned out its a pain in the ass but it's better than a blown-up motor.
