Thanks for sharing this, good thread, and indeed very sobering. I’ve read a lot about recoveries gone wrong as well, with heartbreaking family-men deaths.

Incidentally, man, I seeked out this thread because had one of the most sobering and amazing conversations meeting a disabled dude just tonight at my hotel:

Working out of town in the interior of BC, after very long day, I was in the middle of checking in at the hotel desk, when an older, big dude (named Gord) clearly disabled in quite a scookum electric chair was asking folks in the lobby and restaurant for a tire pressure gauge. Everyone turns him down and him and his sweet wife were walking out when I said “hey, I have a gauge in my work van, let me get it.” So I paused the check in, didn’t end up coming back in for 30 minutes of directly helping this dude fill his chairs tires and shoot the shit. The man just lit up talking to me about his big custom disabled person drivable Ford rig that I thought was so effin cool (which WBC workers comp paid for him), and talking about my 4Runner. And he really opened up more when I told him my own story that I’ve had some tragic, unbelievable unfortunate deaths in the family in past years, and a very modest family inheritance is what allowed me to start my 4Runner mods and fall in love with automotive work. My father past unexpectedly and short while later both his parents killed when their car entered between train track rails and was struck by the train just minutes minutes from my house, and dragged down the tracks stuck to the front. (The media and news ppl are such vultures man).

Anyways Gord injured his rotator cuff bad at work in heavy landscaping, and in the hospital the lazy doctor used an unclean needle which caused a full body staph infection which affects your lower spine or something and it frickin paralyzed him.
Saddest damn story, and that sh*t could happen to anyone - striking you down forever.

So his chair tire bead had been messed up and we got both his tires back to normal and dialed in to 30psi, and taught his wife how for next time and she compensated me for my efforts with an awesome homemade heathly muffin!
Surprisingly, to name a few mods, his rig had an ARB compressor under the hood, valves and control switches at the custom drivers seat, orange hoses with dope ARB attachments, a huge lift plus airbags, 5 tire rotation lt285 ko2’s with apparently locking hub style wheels, entire truck raptor bedliner coated, custom 1000lb roof, custom floorboard system, And killer Aluminess "aircraft aluminum" bumpers: front had 12k warn winch and lighting, rear had tire carrier and compartment boxes and lighting.

thought ya’ll would get a kick out of the pics of this rad truck:

Good story man thanks for sharing and helping that dude. That’s what it’s all about. Unfortunately many of us don’t realize now fortunate and blessed we are until after tragic events. My condolences on your losses I’ll pray for you and family.

I bought my 4R in 2021 to use primarily for fishing and towing my boat and road trips to northern Mi. Then my Mom got sick and my Dad and that took a lot of time and then I had an issue last year. Fortunately I still have them but now a caregiver in addition to working. I had only planned to use the 4R in nice weather anyway in summers but I never thought I’d only have 1k on it almost 3yrs later. Glad you are enjoying your 4r and embrace a the moments and your family.

Love seeing your posts from BC also. I spent a summer out there years ago with an uncle in Vancouver and the island. Now all that family is deceased and I have not been back. You live in Gods country out there!
