Any concerns buying an engine swapped 4Runner?

    So, here's the text from the ad:

    2000 Toyota 4 Runner automatic 4WD. The engine and transmission has been replaced at 377K on body but 120k on new engine and transmission. Very reliable vehicle. Everything works, the only flaw is the driver's side seat. Asking $3,500 OBO.

    The rig has been on the market for a couple months and before I drag my butt up there, what are the downsides to an engine swap? Concerns that you wouldn't normally be looking for? I'm in GA so not too worried about rust and the truck supposedly has been here since new. Is it better to go for one that has NOT had a swap? I have never owned one but always have wanted one and have decided on a 3rd gen 3 iteration limited. I have been an AWD car owner for 18 years so I like that option. Thanks all.....

    So has no one bought a 3rd gen with a new trans and motor?

    So the truck has 377,000 miles? I think an engine change and or rebuild would be required to keep it on the road that long. Having changed an engine on a 1990 Toyota pickup, I can say it wasn’t rocket surgery but I guess a 2000 engine is a bit more complicated. Honestly I think a vehicle with that high of mileage is going to take some effort to keep running. If you think it’s worth your time, I would probably low ball him expecting to put some money into it.

    On a side note, at 377K, it is not a “very reliable vehicle”. Regardless of how well 4Runners are designed and built, they are not immune to fatigue and normal wear and tear. Even if the engine and transmission are sorted out for a while, parts will fail requiring regular maintenance. The maintenance would probably be simple and parts inexpensive but unless you like to tinker, I would pass.

    Thx pork chop.....I do like to tinker. I feel like anyone that owns a 3rd gen would need to tinker. There aren’t many left under 120k. I wish I enjoyed the look of the 4th gen more.... good advice

    It should be a fun hobby vehicle. I would research where the trouble spots are for rust on gen 3 4Runners and bring some coveralls and a mirror when you inspect it. Then I would look for every little problem on it and if you still want it, make a low ball offer, (maybe 2K?).
