64,000 miles on a 16' TRD Pro- maintenance concerns!

So I just picked up this 2016 TRD Pro About six weeks ago and have basically discovered that other than oil changes air filters , cabin filters etc.......No maintenance has been done on the vehicle( talking fluids wise , ( antifreeze, differentials , etc....) I called the various dealers that maintained the vehicle and tried to verify if a -15k service, 30 k service , 45k , 60 k -they all said no just oil changes Oil changes and filters. Truck drives super and is super clean. I checked the antifreeze It's super clean brake fluid,,,etc All looks fine. If you were in my shoes, what maintenance would you do at this stage of the game? I am definitely into preventive maintenance for vehicles in general as I plan on getting 300,000+ miles out of this truck may be more......thanks for your feedback !

 

It could have been DIY'ed and not on dealer records but if we assume nothing but engine oil/filters were done, I would personally shotgun the following:

• Brake Fluid
• Transmission Fluid (drain/fill, exchange, whatever. I have no preference personally at lower mileage and would leak towards an exchange/flush, but others may disagree)
• Grease driveshafts (slide yokes, joints)
  
• Both differentials and transfer case
• I don't know about power steering fluid so I'll let someone else touch on that.
• Maaaybe coolant/antifreeze?

 

If it checks out, it checks out. Oil changes are most important. I have never serviced diffs before 60k. It isn't necessary unless you are in a lot of water. Just be sure to grease the driveshaft, they don't do that at the stealership

 

I have a local shop that can do all the fluids that specializes in Toyota and it's not a dealership....... some stuff I can do....yesterday I cleaned the throttle body intake it was fairly gummed up but clean now and idles at a lower RPM and I feel a little more responsiveness when stepping on the gas pedal

 

I'd definitely get the tranny, differentials and transfer case changed. Grease the drive line zerts, too. The factory coolant is s'posed to be good to 100,000, then 50,000 after that. I change the brake fluid when the brake pads get replaced. Never had an issue in 45 years doin' it that way.

 

Do this. Then you know for sure what was done when and don't have to guess

 

Check coolant with pH strip, below 7 is acidic and needs to be changed. Check brake fluid water content with test probe, anything above 2% should be changed. 0W20 engine oil is ok for maximum fuel economy maybe not so much for maximum engine life. Remove the top plastic radiator shroud and hang a fabric window type screen to keep bugs and rocks out of your AC condenser/radiator, you'll also find engine bay stays cleaner. Redline makes a great transfer case replacement fluid and gear oils used by drivers who long distance tow trailers. Change transmission fluid, keep it red. Drive around town, up long hills or if towing in S4 rather than D to minimize tranny shifting and extend tranny life.

 

It doesn't take much to make these 4runners hit high mileage.

My 2020 has about the same mileage as yours. As far as maintenance goes, Only thing I changed was the oil(ever 7500 miles), air filter, rear brake pads and tires oh n the cabin filter.

I check the coolant and trans fluid every oil change. If its clean and not discolored I wouldn't bother changing it.

 

Just change stuff out based on the age. Sounds like a sweet low mileage vehicle, but it’s probably sat for long periods. Check cv boots and other rubber bits.

 

Covered all the points here. From the local guys that do most of their own work since they off road frequently and/or a lot of miles, definitely diff fluid. With some of the concerns they saw at 30-40K kms (18-25K miles), I’ll be changing mine at 20K kms (12.5K miles).

 

Coming from an OCD preventative maintenances freak, while not ideal, you’re honestly going to be fine imo. These trucks are so overbuilt. Non-enthusiast soccer moms with these do the jiffy lube bare minimum and still manage to get 200K+ out of the powertrain.

Still, I’d personally go in now yourself and just change EVERY fluid with OEM equivalent stuff to be safe, regardless of how it looks. You never know what some hack threw in there that looks clean now. Also check every other item that comes with those major service intervals.

Then you’ll have a truck that you can account every drop of fluid for = ultimate peace of mind.

 

I doubt you have anything to worry about but I understand. If it were me I'd do all of the above that others have mentioned. It doesn't cost that much to have piece of mind.

 

Depending on the conditions the vehicle was driven you should be fine. Oil changes were the most important items. This is however why due diligence should be done prior to purchasing a vehicle.

 

that radiator screen makes a difference? I would’ve never thought of that. You mean like a “mesh” type cloth or more like outdoor fabric type?

 

Like everyone else said, I would go ahead and change the fluids that need to be changed for peace of mind. Don’t forget to grease the drive shaft (should be able to see signs of it being done - or not).

also, you’ll be able to tell pretty quick on the front diff if someone has cracked open the drain hex bolt (took me 5 hours and multiple bp blaster baths to get it loose on the Tacoma - assuming same hex bolt/ design).
