Hey everyone. Anyone running a mid travel setup (king, ads, icon, etc) with a 285/75/17? wondering how much of a difference it is and how much trimming is truly required.

Here's the specs on the different sizes for the analytical types.

    Untitled.jpg

I am running the 285/70/17 with a 2" lift all around and the SCS Ray10 wheels. With my front mud flaps notched I still rub on the cab mount ever so slightly in reverse. I imagine that extra inch diameter on the 285/75/17 would increase that problem significantly. I think you could trim away enough fender to make that fit with a full 3" lift but that cab mount is still going to rub.

I’ve looked at that website before. I love the jump from OEM size to 285/75/17. I’m going for a full 3” lift (ADS all around) and I know I’ll have to trim, it’s just a matter of how much, especially with stock wheels.

That’s a good question. I’m not sure. It won’t be wider than a normal 285, just taller. So I don’t think so since people normally run 285/70/17 on a stock wheel. But I’ll provide pictures when I do it.

I don't know about the 4Runner wheels, but Tacoma wheels yes, they will rub the UCA's with 285's. You cannot run 285's on stock Tacoma wheels without spacers. Check the specs to see if they're the same.

I wonder what the ideal amount of backspacing would be to help with less rubbing before cutting.

Any follow up on how this worked out? I am looking at 285/75/17's as well. I have already done the 3" lift, SPC control arms. I am assuming Cab mount chop will be reqd, I am also running the 2018 Off-Road wheels. I am just curious if wheel changes will be reqd etc as well.

Edit... I guess I should have checked the last time the OP was on haha. Anyone else have input? haha.

I'm running 285/75 ridge grapplers on my trd pro with the stock pro wheels. I have 2.25" lift in the front. (Spacers on the pro bilstein shocks, so I guess 3.25 total.) I just recently installed the lift and have not trimmed anything or even removed the mud flaps. As far as daily driving goes, it catches the mudflaps sometimes, but not enough to concern me at this point. (I like having the mudflaps on lol) one of these weekends I'm going to take care of the necessary trimming. I think running a bigger offset wheel or wider wheel is where you would need to trim more. I dont think I'll need to mess with the body mount in my situation, on a 7" wide wheel.

They are crammed for sure, but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. No issues in the rear.

I'm running 285/70/17 on 3" lift and get rubbing on my fender and body mount when i reverse; when i got my wheels aligned the shop set my caster at 4 degrees to try and help with wheel clearance. I'm sure i'll get no rubbing if i pull the fender liner forward a bit, but not going to cause eventually i'll be going 295s and will have to get a BMC and already planning to do a high clearance bumper trim.

2.5” on ADS all around with 295/70/17 on SCS F5’s 17x9 3.5bs. Minimal trimming of the forward fender liner. I did the stage 1 high clearance mod on the bumper plastics afterward. Wasn’t necessary to run the wheel and tire setup though. I did do the body mount chop.

How is it in regards to stock? The truck feels pretty peppy off the line stock, so I’m hoping it’ll feel more grounded with my mods. I’m getting 18.5MPG right now and expect it to drop to about 12MPG-14MPG. I just purchased a lift to give me 3” in the front and 2” in the rear. I scheduled a BMC the same day I get my lift installed, will have SPC UCA’s to push the tire forward and achieve alignment, and plan on pushing the fender liner forward. Debating if I’ll have to hammer the pinch weld, did you? I ordered 295/70/17 Geolanders so I’m hoping I have all the necessary components/mods to run this setup properly!

Gears. You left out gears. Oh and bumstops. You’ll need those too. I went with DuroBumps and the metal tech rear bumpstop extensions.

Just regear to 4.56. You will hate life with 33’s and stock gears.

I’ve read mixed things about gears. Some hate it, some don’t. So we’ll see! I had 33’s on my Tacoma which was a lot worse in regards to the drivetrain in comparison to the 4runner and it felt fine to me. But cool, thanks! Will add bumpstops to the list.

From personal experience, if you live in a flat area and don’t have hills or experience strong headwinds ever, you won’t see the gear hunting issues. However, after a trip to Georgia and back before I regeared to 4.56, I spent most of the drive on I-75 in 4th gear. The truck was not happy. My most recent trip to Tennessee with the 4.56’s, I had no gear hunting at all. MPG’s were around 15-16 on the highway compared to 9-11 with stock gearing.

I have about 2.5" lift with stock UCA on 285/70-17 tires & SCS Ray10 wheels. It rubbed mudflap & cab mount some but was mostly driveable on street. After I maxed out the caster adjustment and pulled the fender liners forward, it has no rubbing at all. From the look of it, I'd expect 285/75-17 to rub in some conditions but not sure how badly.

gears seem to be a matter of opinion on tires smaller than 35s.

No issues in my 4R with 285/70-17. Street, hwy, & trail have all been fine to me. No issues towing a trailer from Atlanta to west TN. No issues driving from west TN to Kentucky loaded down with a few days worth of camping gear and a few kids.

Had 285/75-17 on my Tacoma with stock gears. That truck was weighed down with a few hundred pounds of steel skids, bumpers, etc. Could feel a bit of lost torque on the street but not enough that I thought gears were worth the money yet. Kinda wish I had kept those tires to put on the 4R.

Can you feel a major difference in your drivetrain with your current setup over stock?

Not really. But I put tires and lift on only about 2 months after buying the 4R so i dont really remember.

Actually, I swapped stock tires/wheels once so I could repaint the Ray10s and get a rebalance. Don't remember noticing anything definite. Kind of thing where maybe there was something but maybe it was placebo because I knew parts were different.

I was running 285/70/17 on mine, 2.0 Fox all around... the rubbing wasn't sitting well with me and cutting to make them fit was not not an option for me. I had 1.5" spacers with left driver tire rubbing after left 1 3/4 turn of the steering wheel. I did like the look but not enough to start cutting and chopping.

good to know! I’m wanting to end up with a stance like this. The poster said they are 33x12.5x17 but I’m not sure if that translates to 285/70/17 or 295/70/17 as some 285’s aren’t true 33’s. I know the -38mm will lush out far enough to get that stance but unsure of how much tire height there is. Definitely don’t want tires that look small on a 3/2 lift.

33x12.5 is inches instead of usual metric sizing. It's roughly 33 inch tall tire with a 12.5 inch section width.
In metric, that would be like 315/65 which I don't even know if they sell.

For comparison, a 285/70-17 is usually just under 33 inch tall and has about 11.2 inch section width.

Putting a 33x12.5 plus big offset wheel is very likely to need some trimming to address tire rub.

This is what 285/70 on Ray10s looks like. (2.5 lift)

Not good with numbers:rofl: but I couldn’t figure out if the 12.5 would be a 295 but it sounds like they’re actually wider than I thought! I will be running the Ray10’s with -38mm offset. I already have a BMC scheduled and will be pushing fender liner forward, eventually doing a slight cut at the front bumper anyways. I also have UCA’s incoming to help with caster and alignment. But sweet! It doesn’t look bad at all. I’ll have 3” in the front and 2” in the rear.

My Ray10s are the less offset.
With the -38 wheels and 33x12.5 tires you will have a pretty aggressive looking stance.
Post pics once it's all on.

Forgot about this thread lol but here it is, 3 months in and I love the setup. Not laggy enough to make me want to regear, still has plenty of power. It does fine on mountain climbs on the interstate, hold steady at about 2800k RPMS going 65mph and does great in town.

Those were Firestone MT2’s. Don’t waste your money if you’re not on dirt all the time. They do not like the highway. A 3k Mile round trip to Texas killed them. I’m on 295/70 Toyo RT’s now and they are amazing.
