The right, front passenger side, running board light was not working so decided to take it apart...as you can see by the pics it was a bit rotten plus the little connectors in the bulb housing part had deteriorated as well so the bulb doesn't receive any juice. The running board itself is in great shape (aluminum I think). Hate to start pulling apart the other three but they are probably just as rotten.
If anyone has a parts manual I would greatly appreciate numbers of all the parts shown and if you have encountered this problem, perhaps prices, and/or advice (careful..). Thanks.

that looks brutal..... i bet it'd be cheaper to pick up someone elses used running boards than to buy the new parts from toyota

Mine were the same! Decided to just take them off and leave them off. Much happier now!

That is an option that may quickly become reality. Was fairly easy to remove it and the cost of parts will probably be insane. I wonder what the newer models are like.
Anyways this will show others what can happen and what to watch out for.

By the look of your profile pic, you also live in an area where they may use salt for the roads. Same story here. My biggest fear is everything else on the truck doing the same as the running boards did.

Yeah, lots of salt, (read tons!) and rustproofing every year only slows down the rusting process. (or as you can see by the pics, didn't do anything).
But, she's 10 years old and in my climate :canada:you gotta expect it. Only a minor inconvenience anyways. Truck still runs like a top

I like this and was thinking of this for my 2005. Are the lights specific for running board and how easy was it to wire.

Do you know what bulbs go in the running board light housing? how hard was it to access where you'd swap the bulb? I want to convert mine to LED's. thanks!

I replaced all my running board lights/lens/covers this past summer and hand fabricated the metal shell that holds the plastic light lens and connects the entire unit and plastic cover to the running board. From my research, the metal shell was only available with the full OE running board and not available from Toyota at this point. Without a new shell, you will not be able to mount the lens or connect the lens and cover to the running board. I don't know the bulb number, but it comes included with the step lamp 81380-35010 and 81780-35010 (one for driver side Ft/Passenger side Rear)and the other for (driver side Rear/Passenger side front). I also replaced the 4 Covers ( 51759-35090 / 51779-35100) Keep in mind that if you want to do anything more then replace the bulb, you will need to fabricate a new metal shell. The bulbs should be a simple 1/3 turn and pull out of the lens, but it will take some effort to remove the bulb from the connector without wrecking it. I researched changing everything out and going to LED lights, but all the aftermarket kits looked cheap and not easy to install. For the time and money, it was worth it to me to keep everything original. I have attached some pic's showing how I fabricated the shell (bottom section connected to upper section) using MD flat bar aluminum 1/16 thick 1 1/2 wide and 48 inch long. I used 2 of these bars. Good Luck
