What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

5 Toyotas, and this is the first time I’ve had the wheels I actually want. I’ve always ran stock wheels!

 

Got me a Teton shifter and it is freakin awesome, seriously tho I can’t take my hands off this thing. I feel like I’m driving a tank.

 

Added some black stick ons on the rear logo and the letters. Together with the updated tail lights, this 13 year old truck looks 2023.

 

For those of you who wash your own car and do your own detailing...

In response to a complaint I had made to Costco about their microfiber towel labels (super large tags, will scratch, and you'll destroy the edge hem if you pull the tag out in its entirety), I was notified by the regional Costco office by email yesterday that they would be discontinuing the Costco microfiber towels and replacing them with a future product that does not have that big, scratchy tag.

Their response was that the label was required for importation purposes. They went on to say that they are reclassifying the product category and they will start to sell them without those stupid, scratchy labels.

Surely, they already had this in the works, but it's nice to know it's coming up.

 

If I got one like that, I'd be tempted to plug it myself for practice. I'd take it in if that failed.

My approach to labels like that is to cut them off close to where they're sewn in, and then pick out weft threads one by one until there are none left sticking out. It's a waste of time, but I end up with what I want.

 

I tore, I precision cut with Japanese sewing tools, tweezers, etc. Tearing got all the label out, but the hem gets damaged and they unravel in the wash and over use.

Best towel, worst label.

 

Did some 60k maintenance. Oil,
Akebono front pads, greased driveshaft, and topped off coolant. Also finished installing the RCI skids I got from the labor day sale. I'll say that it's possible to install the trans/tcase skids by yourself, but I'd wait for the wife next time.

Yes they have a kdss compatible version.

 

With everyone down here in my neighborhood getting their roofs redone, (still deciding if the hail damage was severe enough to have mine done), I'm just waiting for the day I have to patch one of mine.

 

Yup! Keep my repair kit always with me and my air hoses too.

 

Might be easy when the entire neighborhood doing it so insurance have a hard time pushing back not approving certain repairs. I think the adjusters work for multiple insurance companies so they look at one house and then just glance on others and approve everything. Roof, gutters, siding, fence, deck,etc.. So far my roof is done and painting my house and deck should be starting soon. First thing I told the roofing guys are "if you can deal with insurance and do everything. else forget it.". So they did everything, calling insurance, talking to insurance adjusters when they come, etc..

 

Yeah, the guys down here do everything too. I've already talked to my insurance agent and my deductible would be just under $3k for a new roof. I jokingly told the agent on the phone that I was hoping to use that money to get lockers and all I got was crickets. Some people just don't understand! LOL

 

Well I haven't decided if I'm having the roof done this time or not, I went up and looked at it and I didn't think it looked as bad as the guy said. Plus we get hail here every spring well into summer so I may wait till next years storms come through and then have it done. Lockers will still have to wait until 2024 though as I have a senior in HS applying to colleges, gulp!

Gun locked my Scepter jerry cans

 

Installed my KAON front recovery points today. Pretty straight forward install with no cutting - just bolt them on!

 

Changed the differentials oil and transfer case. Next up got to push the fender liner forward.

 

Nothing too impressive on Friday. Mostly cosmetic "upgrades." Found a red leather/black carbon fiber shifter:




The big project was next: replaced the white hood scoop with a black matte OEM one. Found it online at Serra Toyota of Decatur, AL. Had a great price on it (plus free shipping). Even the weather stripping was low priced. I think in total I payed less than $80.




Other than those 2 big ones, I put in a new Garmin Mini2 camera in. Old one gave up it's ghost after 3 years of use. Easy peasy.

 

Upgraded to a new roof rack today. Had the Rhino Rack pioneer platform for years. It’s a great system. Just wanted an upgrade to a full length rack. Couldn’t be happier with the Sherpa Crestone!

I'd highly recommend an all weather lock solution, as those locks do not last in the elements.

I used a gun lock on my fence gate for maybe 3 months and I had to cut it off as I couldn't even turn the key.

 

@PVT Pablo smart recommendation, I appreciate that good to know. Prolly not all weather jerry cans that I'll be running all Canadian winter neither

 

Think spraying a lubricant / rust protectant on their bare metal areas could buy me a little more time in the rain?

 

Ya know maybe? I would say packing it with grease might keep water and crap out. But the tiny uncoated Tumbler and pins probably just aren't up to the task for long.

I'd google outdoor locks, I've got a couple that secure my roof top awning that have been up there for years without maintenance.

 

Notable here is just how much dirt (and water?) got past the original weather seals on the skoop. Did you find any rust?

 

Installed my Westcott Designs 0 degree Sliders without a top plate and no kickout. Install was a breeze with the help of the wife.

 

Nice!! I’m plan on ordering mine. How long did you wait. I’m going kick out and top plate. Which did you do mig, or tig weld? And your decision on the metal? One other question I cannot find from anyone and I have searched what is the measurement how from they stick out to stand on. Are they out far enough to prevent door dings? Thanks.
