Hey-any advice on my ‘06 4Runner Sport Edition is appreciated-cruising down the highway today and started to lose power..pulled over and it stalled out. Towed it home, guys put a few gallons of gas in and it started right up and seems fine. Had 42 miles until empty and light wasn’t on...I’m original owner and this has never happened before.

    Dang! That sucks.

Are you running the factory size tires, or did you change tire sizes lately?

Only a guess, but I'd say you were out of gas.In the old days we called them "idiot lights" for a reason. These days with computers and all,we put too much confidence in the dash indicators. To me they are still "idiot lights".

So, your fuel pump is cooled by liquid gasoline. When you run your tank close to empty, your fuel pump may overheat, lose prime, and not pump. Suggestion for you and everyone else in the world, never let your fuel tank get below 1/4. This will ensure the long life of your fuel pump. The more it over heats and/or runs dry, the more it wears and eventually will die and you'll have to replace it.

I have allows be told that and I tell my son the same thing. I very rarely let the tank get below 3/16 to 1/4 of a tank. I also keep close account on the miles per tank so if the gauge is off or quits working I'll know how far I safely go.

I ran my '03 until it said 1 mile left.... which it not like me (long story). Running one low is a good way to burn up the fuel pump.

My wife constantly runs it to near empty and I continue to berate her for doing it but I just can't get it into her head. She drove about 5 miles with the display telling her she had 1 mile left so that didn't help any.

Good to know! I hate stopping for gas (always in a rush) so I tend to wait until the gas light is on - and then some. Guess I need to change that...
