Anyone install the Magnuson Supercharger on their 5th gen yet? I may pick up a new TRD Pro with one already installed tomorrow. Curious how they perform, maintenance, mpg, and pros/cons...

You may be the first I've heard of with that setup. Looking forward to a review if you go through with it as I'm looking to add a S/C to mine.

I’m planning to drive it later today, hoping these contractors at my house hurry up! Stuck waiting around until they finish or leave, poor planning on my part... If I do pull the trigger, I’ll absolutely write a full review. It has a Magnuson S/C, 4.56 gears, Icon UCAs w/Delta joints, Icon spacer for leveling, Toyo 33’s and a few other small mods (it was a test build for the S/C).

Working on the numbers to put a deal together, thought I’d share a few pics in the meantime...

As far as the S/C, it definitely adds A LOT of power. The sound is very different (far less desirable than my TRD Pro Tundra dual exhaust, which I expected) and the power band will take some getting used to. The dealer that has this T4R, has sold 4-5 S/Cs since they let a few people test drive it.

Waiting on the dealership, it’s on hold for me until they figure out my trade value (‘17 TRD Pro Tundra).

Not that bad. Once I put the deal together, I’ll let you guys know exactly.

They’ve been silent all day, hoping they didn’t sell it out from under me...

Yeah, I had a 4RP sold to someone else after I had a deposit put down. Good luck man! I hope you can get the deal finished.

According to the dealership, they are now using this 4Runner to demo S/Cs... They’ve sold 4-5 and have installed most of those. There’s an issue though, it appears they may have to send the ECUs to Magnuson for proper programming. The remote delivery of software is not “taking,” so several T4R owners are in rentals until they sort it out. The demo vehicle’s ECU was programmed by Magnuson.

I would agree with your buddy, but still a huge improvement over stock. Believe it’s still there.

I would love to see how this turns out. The Magnuson SC is on my list for upgrades.

    Please keep us posted.

My first time posting here. I am looking to do some mods to my 2018 TRD Off Road Premium with KDSS. I like it, but want more power. I am more interested in superchargers than a turbo, but not sure which way to go. I know some of you all like the Magnuson, but what are the pros and cons of it? Anyone know of any specs like hp and torque? I'm not the most computer savvy, but I was looking on the Magnuson website and it looks like they have stage 1 and 2 available; how difficult is it to beef it up to a stage 3 or 4? I also saw that you have to modify your ECU by sending it to Magnuson. How long will your car be out of commission then?
Also, I have been in a car with a Whipple supercharger (before and after the mod) and it was a beast. I think it bumped up the HP and torque over 150+ each. I don't believe though that they make them for a 4Runner do they?
In summary, I'm looking to bump the torque and hp to over 400. How easy or difficult would this be?

I would call them and see how many stages they can add. I'm not sure the engine can do a stage 4, that may be too much staging.

    Hi, there.

I was the first Boise, Idaho install of the Magnuson SC on a T4R.

The stock T4R was just too weak, loud, and obviously straining the engine. With a full load, it strained going uphills, Hauling a 3000 lb trailer up inclines resulted in downshifts to second. With the SC, that has all gone. The T4R stays in higher gears, putting down much more HP and ft/lbs in all revs. Magnuson claims 358 BHP, and while I haven’t had it dyno’d, I don’t have a reason to doubt it. And, it accelerates so effortlessly now. The ECU program also addresses the slow tip-in (slow throttle opening) that vexes so many runner drivers. The overall characteristics are responsive and impressive.

MPG is a little improved except when I decide to put my foot down. I used to average a little over 18 mpg around town, before, and get nearly 19 after. Freeway MPG has improved, except when I go faster (cuz I can easily now).

    Installation notes

I strongly recommend using a dealer or certified installer for two reasons. First: this is a long complex install. It will take two full days or more for all but experienced mechanics, and you could make mistakes or just be confused and take even longer. Second: the value of a certified installation for the Magnuson provided warranty. (My dealer quoted 10 hrs to install. It took 12, but, they kept to their estimate.)

Note that at this time Magnuson requires stock intake and exhaust, and that there is only one tune for this. That might change in the future. But, if you want their warranty, keep your intake and exhaust stock!

    On/off-road results

My son has a Lexus GX 460, which I can confidently outrun. I “can” easily leave behind stock v-8s from Ford, Chevy, Ram, and Jeep. Despite this, the responsiveness and flexibility is all there for off-road maneuvers. You (me really) are in full control with predictability. The vehicle will not get away from you or put you at any risk.

I've heard some chatter about the torque converter being easier to unlock at cruising speeds due to the added torque. For example, cruising in 5th gear on flat, then coming to an uphill grade and maintaining speed. Rather than shift down into 4th, the torque converter unlocks to bump the revs a little. With all of the newfound torque, the ECU will allow the truck to run unlocked, which will run the trans temps up in short order. Any input on this?

At 8-10 hours shop rate, you're probably close to $1500-2000 for install all said and done.

    Ok. Further perf thoughts.

My personal - unscientific, but, real observed performance over the last two months - Since the engine runs in the hills at lower revs, does less shifting, and seems to have less frequent torque converter unlock in general - I would think it would extend the life of the torque converter.

Maybe Magnuson will add to the comments. But, the ECU tuning seems conservatized to offer safety for the entire drivetrain, with improved performance and no real hit to economy (until you stomp that right foot).

    Regarding labor.

If you can’t get it done for $1000 or less, check around. The two local dealers in Boise were within $200 of each other. One quoted more hours at a lower rate, the other vice-verse. Result: labor on mine was about 950. However, that may mean they absorbed part of the labor cost in the price of the supercharger, and because this was the first one they had done in “Modern TImes” (post TRD SC standard offerings).

My dealer said they now have three more scheduled this winter! Yeah to having Supercharged brethren!

PS. I would still love to see Magnuson deliver a more aggressive tune.

Also, my son wi the Lexus GX460 says my T4R is lighter, livelier and more fun to drive. Also, that his CA friends all want my beast. Lol!!!

Magnuson won't deliver a more aggressive tune with the kit due to its limited drive train warranty.

Need to find a tuner if you want more aggressive and/or smaller pulley.
