As I turned into my jobsite my 4Runner beeped and said "Brake Override Malfunction, See Dealer". The gas pedal did nothing at this point. My 2020 TRD Pro with 80K miles would only drive at walking speed so creeped to my office trailer and killed the engine.

Turns out a P2111 code is a throttle body stuck open. I cleared the code with my Carista and it ran fine. Seems the throttle body may need cleaning according to internet searches.

I removed the throttle body and was shocked by how dirty it was. I drive in an extremely dusty environment everyday but, it looked like I forgot to put in the air filter. I do change the air filter at every 5000 mile oil change. I was using Fram air filters until they cheaped out and deleted the pre filter and the wire mesh. I'm currently running Wix filters.

Anybody have any ideas how to keep from ingesting so much dust?

Good that you're running wix, as they're one of the better air filters. I wouldn't use fram anything. In any of my vehicles, as I tend to stay with OEM filters.

A good video to watch if you have a few minutes to spare:

Triple checked, everything is correct, clamps are tightened, etc. All that dust came through the filter.

Thanks, the video is how I got turned on to the Wix filter.

    Just storage mods.
If it's all put together right with no leaks, and you've got the best filter you can, then it seems that you just need to clean your filter more often.

Holy schnickey! That ain’t right!!! I cant believe a paper filter would allow that much dust through. Maybe a K&N would, but not any regular filter.

Besides an install error, maybe a filter had a bad gasket?

But why is it wet inside there?

Also, what’s going on with the mating/sealing surface between the throttle body and intake plenum? It looks horrible…

given your willingness to remove the tb i’m sure my advice is already in your action plan.

it’s unlikely anything catastrophic happened but that amount of intrusion into the tb and manifold isn’t good either.

i’d look at the filter more often and adjust the change intervals. air flow follows the path of least resistance and probably the root of the intrusion since the filter was so clogged.

Just checked my service records, the vehicle has had 19 air filters installed since new in 80k miles. I don't think the filter was ever clogged. I think fine silty dust passes through the filter, much like it does the cabin filter.

It is wet inside from the oil vapor via the crankcase ventilation system.

interesting thing about the silty dust. i’ve been on a few dusty trails but likely no where near as much as you. i’ve explored the intake pipe out of curiosity after a few days out in the dusty wild and not much was going on.

is everything working normal after cleaning the tb?

Everything seems to be OK but, I'm replacing the throttle body and gasket anyway.

The cabin air filter doesnt have a gasket around the filter. Also the cabin pulls air from everywhere. It’s not a sealed system. It can’t be compared to the engine air filter, which is designed to filter ALL the air sent to the engine.

There’s something wrong somewhere. I can’t imagine any aftermarket filter media allowing this much dust through the engine. I just dont think this is normal, no matter how silty the dust it.

I recommend going through everything. The airbox sealing perimeter, all the intake connections, missing plugs or hoses that have come off the intake tube, the sealing surfaces of the throttle body…something isn’t right.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
WIX filters are far superior to most, especially Fram.

So... I just ran into this over the weekend. I've only been on one light trail and have only put on 9000 miles in my 2 years of ownership. I got the p2111 and brake override malfunction. Had it inspected and this is basically what they said caused the issue, but mine was nowhere near the level of what the OP posted. Is this a common thing? Given that I've barely driven and only trailed once, I didn't think I would run into something like this.

Is the stock filter just not up to the task? Something wrong with the airbox design?
